Well. I'll have to fix those then. Interesting, the re-redone wipe
Very interested to see how that was done.

The same goes for these, this shot was redone for the 2004 DVD not for the 1997 SE:

This one is still left in your comparisons:

Yuck, those starfield replacements in the Avenger scene are very screwed up.  I noticed them before and they bothered me considerably, because the movies are supposed to have big and bright stars where in the '04 versions they are usually small and dim.  And it isn't even the same element composited in at all; there are far fewer stars and it just looks ridiculous.  (Not to mention that nasty aqua haze over everything is even more obvious in a direct comparison, but that's a whole other thing.)

I think it's just the bad transfer, I'm not seeing a starfield replacement.

Looking more closely I think they are the same stars, but in some shots they're positioned way differently in addition be being very dull, so it's hard to recognise sometimes . . .

Yeah, these three shots definitely have the starfield-plates composited in different positions compared to the original, if these screen-caps are matched up perfectly that is, but it looks like it.

Noticed this when I last skimmed through the '97 version of Empire, I've sort of pointed it out before but then I went by your screen-caps. Anyway, these two shots of the bridge have a static Stardestroyer outside the windows in the original, but they added some motion to it in the SE, which is nice I guess but as there is some time going on between these two shots, the second matte should have had a differently positioned Stardestroyer, both are using the same fx-work which makes it a little deja vu-shot.

^ Love the deliberatly removed color red in the '04 transfer. ;)

You know, I really get the feeling that a couple of young guys at Lucasfilm started dropping in leftover stuff from the prequels into the 1080 scan of the OT and George saw it one day...god this transfer just gets worse every day. Surprised it's not interlaced as a "creative choice".

Thanks Harmy, I'll add those next time I get a chance, along with all of the updates everyone else has been suggesting, and a couple wipes from ANH I think I missed.

The official changelist on the ones I did catch say something about focusing the shot more on the principals, but I'm pretty sure someone on set knew how to frame shots. Almost like it would have been their job or something. Don't understand why perfectly good shots needed to be changed like that.

Yeah, a digitally recomposited effects shot, as long as it doesn't noticeably alter the layout, doesn't really change anything in terms of the original intentions of the film-makers (although it does take away most of the effect's historical value) but this zooming in stuff is one of the changes that I find quite offensive, as it alters the original director's and director of photography's intention and all that without their permission and that's why I tried (and hopefully succeeded) to unzoom them in my Despecialized Empire.

I think someone on the SE team just felt that the camera mounted in the front of the cockpit mockup looked too fake. Zooming in makes the frame more immediate and modern and cluttered. I agree this should not have been done.

When I watch the 1997 S.E. I always go back to what Dennis Muren says in the "Making Of" about the team not even knowing whether they were going to finish on time for the release with everything they were tasked to do.

Maybe GL gave a "shortcut 101" class to get things moving.....LOL

Made the time and updated ESB with the zooms Harmy pointed out, changed some of the descriptions of 2004 changes I had marked as 1997, took the screenshots of 97 wipes that we re-redone in 2004 for ratio correction later, and added two more wipes and a repeated matte of the Falcon that I had missed to ANH.

I'm not quite sure if this is relevant but I just noticed that while the sky has been completely replaced in this shot, the forest is the same but flipped for some reason.

Veeeery interesting. I'm pretty sure the guy was live action against the forest, interesting that they would matte him out and flip everything. Must have something to do with lighting directions.

I just noticed the last couple posts were deleted. I don't even remember what we were talking about!
