@brash_stryker

Why make it personal by calling other people names? I totally agreed with you up until that point.

Huh? When did I call anyone a name? :-/

I assume you meant the "selfish ungrateful babies" comment which is more a description of the attitudes than "namecalling". Though how that would cause my point to lose its validity and make you no longer agree with me at that point...I have no idea.

Seriously, this project is months (or years) away.  Why is everybody getting their panties in a bunch?

I agree that it's not worth continuing the discussion now.  But I just see rational discussion here, not any panty bunching.

Except for vbangle, of course.

Splitting hairs.

You said "Those who are [doing x] are just being selfish, ungrateful babies." Those are words bound to aggravate anyone who said they'd rather not download a 25 GB file, as well as guys like me who just don't like to see flaming on OT.com.

I said I agreed with you up until that point, meaning I don't agree with your assessment of those who expressed their opinion, nor with your choice of wording. It was unnecessary and uncivil, by most standards.

That's all. Sorry to go off-topic.

I for one would be happy with a 5-8GB x.264 encoded 720p mkv or even an xvid if i couldn't be bothered downloading 8gigs, as i only ever watch movies on my computer, don't even own a TV and couldn't give a rats ass about menus or whatever.

Ady: thanks for the reply.  My main thing is just how RED the tank is behind C3P0 (and Chainsaw and Frink?  I don't buy the "not in use" bit.  The thing goes from slightly colored water to cherry jello)... if there was just some more consistency between the 2 shots (as best as it could be done), that would be fantastic (even if it meant making the tank behind C3P0 more clear like how it looks when Luke is in it).

Here are the scenes in question (for other viewers):

Here is an alternate take (a bit more magenta than red, but you get the idea, as the bacta liquid is supposed to be thicker than water):

I hope it isn't taboo to go EU or BTS on my first post, but as I understand it from set notes combined with the novelization, Luke was suspended in the water while his friends watched, then the bacta was introduced to the bath(and story, getting quite a write up. Reminds me of how it's described in X-wing novels), obscuring Luke completely in the dense color.  That the red tank sits there in the aftermath implies that the scene was completely filmed, but for reasons of pacing reshot/trimmed.

wow, this has turned from Star wars into format wars ;)

After a lot of consideration i think it will be best for me to release ESB:R as just 4 releases:

720p high bitrate mkv
PAL DVD-9
NTSC DVD-9
Special featured DVD-5 NTSC only

Now this way i won't be wasting a lot of time having to do multiple versions and then have the hassle of uploading such a high volume. The mkv can be played either on a computer or through a media player (which are now a lot more common and aren't expensive). Also if anyone wanted to burn it to a blu-ray then they can just use TSMuxer to convert it to a blu-ray format and this takes no time at all and loses no quality.

The DVD's will only be DVD-9 because they can easily be shrunk to fit on a DVD-5 using something like DVDShrink if someone wanted that, but with dual layer burners being commonplace now and discs being really cheap then i can't see why someone would want a DVD-5 nowadays anyway.

Then the special features disc will be NTSC only as it doesn't really matter about the smaller than PAL resolution and people can download it if they want to watch the features without having to download a 25gb blu-ray disc.

If people want to complain then quite frankly i'm not bothered. If they can't be bothered to put in a little effort to download these and shrink/convert if they wanted a specific format then i really can't see why i should be expected to.

Now i've done a bit of tweaking to the bacta tank and i've now got it to a colour that i'm happy with, without it looking recoloured. It's lso very reminiscent of the original Ralph Mcquarrie production paining:

Love the look of the new bacta tank. I was never fussed about the idea that it should be a different colour, but it looks very cool.

Out of interest, how much more effort would it be to render the special features as a PAL disc as well? I just find NTSC jitter extremely distracting, even when the focus isn't on the picture quality, and it would "feel wrong" having a two-disc set in different formats. If it's a lot of extra effort on your part, then don't sweat it;but if it's mainly out of concern for viewer confusion, I think having the film available in both formats and the special features only in one would be at least as confusing.

Ady, do you have any idea how big the 720p MKV file would be? I'm hoping for at least 4GB :)

Nice bacta tank screens!

won't the extras be on PAL dvd-9 as well?

I'm very happy with the format choice. I'm sure the community will help put out other formats to keep everyone happy.

I think it'd be a real shame if the highest quality release was denied a professional menu. Is there a way of reusing a menu from a DVD for authoring a Blu Ray in conjunction with the mkv?

...not counting the DVD-5 for your ESB:R 'behind-the-scenes' features, am I right to assume the others listed will be the same proposed formats for all your future edits too then adywan?

Great job on the 'bacta tank' shot!  It's a little thing, but it really helps to tie things together better with the look of the tank afterwards.  Glad you had another look at that.

Thanks, Adywan! It looks great!

Seeing this made me think of a question. I apologize if it's been asked and answered before, but will you be making FX tracking available to turn on and off just like ANH:R? Just curious. Thx.

I do not fear the Dark Side as you do.

Nice screenshot up there and yes, it is very reminiscent of the McQuarrie painting. :) They even got Hamill to thrash around a bit, like in the painting. Anyone know why? Was it the sting of the bacta on his wounds or something like that?

FX tracking?  Are you talking about the text commentary?

I think he's supposed to still be mumbling about Dagobah and Yoda, at least he is in the comic.

I always took it as he was jerking awake, because moments later he swims up and out.

I'm sure someone on here could figure it out without Ady having to worry about it himself.  Of course, I personally have no idea, so I could be talking out of my ass...

I agree about the new coloring, it looks like something future-y rather than just water with a red light under it now :)

Great job so far Adywan. I really liked what you did with the coloring on Han's rescue of Luke. Very appropriate. If there's one thing that stood out for me that I would like to address, it's this shot.

rebelwalk

This added rebel trooper is just poking me in a bad way. I'm watching the shot of Han riding back into the rebel base when all of a sudden this big beige colored thing comes in and takes up the almost half of the screen than we instantly cut to the inside of the base. To me, it makes the cut from outside to inside feel a bit disjointed because the added trooper takes so much of my attention away from Han.
