I know this is a bit off topic, but... true story... in 1977, at age 17, I actually had to walk through a cemetery, at night, to see Star Wars in the theater.  I was staying in a dorm at Utah State for the summer, and in between the dorms and the theater was a big, old, and unlit cemetery. Didn't bother me, but some of the other kids didn't want to make the walk alone.

dark_jedi,

As someone who just discovered this forum, let me echo the sentiments of all those who appreciate the incredible efforts you and other like you have made to preserve the original trilogy as they were first seen.

I was 19 when I first saw Star Wars in 1977.  I went to a midnight showing.  I had to walk three miles because the headlights on my car blew out.  I can still remember how much I enjoyed the opening crawl and the way the Star Destroyer fly over blew me away.

To be honest, although I am an old school fan, I have enjoyed many of the changes that Lucas made.  But it's the original versions that really get me pumped.  To me they represent Lucas' original vision as it was, not the bleached and sanitized version he now wants everyone to believe it was.

I also believe an artist's (directors included) skill is manifested through the constraints placed on him/her.  In the original trilogy as filmed, we see the Lucas team at it's best.  The attack on the Death Star only gets better when you know they got the effect by sliding cameras on guide wires.

Imho (and a long windy one at that), Lucas needs to wise up; and not just for the fans.  His own legacy is at risk.  If he is succesful, in 50 or 100 years when no one remembers the original versions and they review his work, what they might say is "Nice  But anyone with decent computer skills can do that"

Anyway, I really appreciate what all of you are doing.  You are giving me back a piece of my youth.  Please don't let the comments of a few idiots make you forget that.

Thanks again.  I look forward to the completion of v3 and project blu.

You really nailed it there.  Heck, in a few years you'd be able to reproduce the Special Editions on a home computer.

I remember thinking a little while back that it's a good thing that some jacka-- didn't think about cleaning up the special effects in Ray Harryhausen's films.  A little computer work and you could smooth out the motion, or heck, it wouldn't be too much trouble to recreate CGI versions of the creatures and just rematte them into the film.

Just because we CAN improve effects in classic films, doesn't me we should.

Too off topic? Um, let's see, something about V3 project, um.. Thanks D_J!

I've been following this endeavor casually for a while now, but just got around to downloading the sample.  Fired it up on my 50" panny plasma, and WOW!  Very impressive.  I definitely appreciate all the effort being put into this and can't wait to get my hands on it.

Pardon me if this has been discussed, but what about bittorrent for sharing the files?

Bittorrent would take some time to ramp up...3 or 4 of us would have to have the file to begin with and then all of us seeding....but remember we're talking 23 gb here, thats a huge torrent and would die really quick.

My upstream is a little over 1 Mb/s so it would take what 3 or 4 days and nights for me to upload to a.b.sw but if Dark_Jedi wanted me to I'd do it.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I'd offer myself as an uploader for bittorrent if needed. My upload speed caps around 5-6MB/s. I'm used to uploading 40-50 gig uploads every few weeks.

I can help seed the heck out of the dvd edition when it's released.

I don't think the torrent would die, and if we get a lot of people seeding, it would be very fast to dl.  I don't know what the original download solution was going to be, but there's no reason we can't do both.

(if it was that speed-capped dl site it would take about a year to come down :) )

Just watched the demo...holy shit.  I know they say you can't polish a turd but DAMN dark_jedi sure can make it sparkle.

I've said this before, but X264 is the way to go for a manageable 720p release. You can upload the video and audio sperately to keep file size even smaller, and let the downloader chose which audio stream(s) he prefers.

For 4-6gb worth of video, x264 will give you the best 720p video quality at a realistic size.

I will second x264.  I just watched The Fighter in x264.  2.4GB and I'd be hard-pressed to distinguish it from Blu-Ray at normal viewing distances.

I'll be happy to seed whatever is released indefinitely...I do the same with all the hockey games I download.  :D

That would be great. I don't really care for PCM or DTS-HD audio, because I don't have the audio equipment to really make good use of them, so downloading just the video and muxing it with h_h's AC3 would seriously cut the download size for me and I could probably split it into two AVCHD DVDs.

Well to set things straight, my intention on this project is NOT to split up the resources, this is a Blu-ray project, and the video alone is already encoded at an avg of 16500, and weighs in at 14 GB's(for Star Wars anyways) ESB will be rendered hopefully within a day or two, then encoded, and no offense to all you saying "I will help seed", "I will seed forever", that is not my issue LOL, it is the initial upload, you guys can't "seed forever" until I put it there in the first place right?

I am still well away from being able to release this set(Blu) anyways, I will figure out what I am going to do when and if that time comes, I need to get everything done first.

What are you looking at? Okey Dokey.

@ Harmy, I thought you were getting your scenes from that AVCHD project anyways, at least that is what I thought I read from you, how many different scenes of the same thing do you need LOL, it seems you are asking for clips in every single thread here.

Well, from the samples I've seen I think your project will still be a bit better (no offence to Mattman) but if I can't get yours or it will be really difficult to get it, the others will have to do.

I'm doing rotoscoping, so I can utilize several different sources in one shot and I'm trying out what seems to work best, so I need clips from all the different sources I can get (for example my latest version of the speeder entering Mos Eisley combines the SE, the GOUT and Puggo Grande) and I need just clips cuz it would be pointless to download a whole film just for one or two shots which I may or may not use.

14GB is an ideal size to split into two DVD9 AVCHDs with an array of high bitrate AC3 soundmixes included but I understand your desire to make this a blu-ray release and will gladly accept whatever you decide to release.

I don't particularly care what the final size is since I don't plan on burning it to anything.  WDTV Live Plus FTW.

What about the v3 DVD set, d_j?
Will you be uploading those to torrent sites/filesharing servers?

If the blu's are that large and complicated to begin with, I wouldn't mind settling for v3, since they blow (my current) v1 (of your edit) out of the water anyway.

For the Project Blu Version of ANH, is it possible to put seamless branching to show the 1981 crawl as well, possibly sourced from the 2004 SE HD broadcasts? Seamless branching has been done for other releases, such as Editdroid's and Mattmanomega's. Of course, I can understand if this would mess up the audio tracks or if it is too much work, so please understand that this is just an idea I had.

I really could care less for ED's and Omegas projects, and the crawl is not Theatrical, so no I will not be adding it, plus everything is ready for authoring on SW and ESB, just working on a few things for Jedi now and these can all be authored up, just as soon as my menu guy is ready.

Any news when the V3 DVDs are coming out?

All three openings are theatrical, but you cannot get the 1981 opening from the '97/'04 transfer, all three crawls are different.

Haven't had the time to convert my Jedi subscript for this project yet, will work on it today.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

DJ could do this using the opening shot from the JSC V2 (color corrected and cropped to match, of course) - I've checked myself and it can be done, the frame counts are the same (from first frame with "STAR WARS" to first frame of shot #2, the reverse angle of the space fight).
