The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released) — Page 22

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but has ANH and ROTJ been reconstructed by Adywan as well?  OT's search engine isn't so great.

ROTJ is currently being reconstructed by Harmy. You can already get the NTSC DVD5 version if you ask him nicely, although you might want to wait for the DVD9 version. As for ANH, Adywan previously announced plans for a later reconstruction, so it's really just a matter of time and patience, I guess.

Ady, could you please upload the HD matte paintings you used for this reconstruction (and any other HD matte paintings you might have). I wouldn't bother you with this but I've been trying to find them for ages and you're the only person I know, who has them. Thanks :-)

Just a quick question; will hairy_hen's 5.1 mix work with this theatrical reconstruction?

I'd like to mux some more audio options that's all.

Thanks.

I finally got this dl'd from RS thanks to the kind help of another member here, but it seems it requires a password that I don't have.  My copy is from rapidshare via a dlc file.  It is broken into 42 rar files and one md5 file (whatever that is).  Does anyone happen to know the password?  Thanks!

The md5 file can be used to verify that all parts downloaded properly.  I can't remember what program you use it with but it's something like md5 checksum.  Try google.

Thanks, ADYWAN was it.

And I just got done skimming through this.  AMAZING!  I don't have time to sit and watch the whole thing right now, but what I saw was incredible.  I don't know how you did it, much less in two weeks.  The only version of ESB (or any of the SW films) I've watched in years is the GOUT.  I had gotten quite used to it, honestly.  This felt like watching it in HD it was so different!

I did notice that in some scenes (the carbon freeze chamber in particular) that the crushed blacks still reared their ugly head (especially jarring coming from the GOUT to this).  And that Vader's saber is still a little pink at times.  And that a few SE changes were still in there (Luke grunting as he rolled down the steps during the duel).  But over all it is such a HUGE improvement that I really don't mind those things.

And after watching the Puggo Grande & this, it's so refreshing to see Star Wars without all the dvnr smearing!!  It makes it that much harder to stomch the fact that we're not getting the originals on Bluray....

hey adywan,

I love this edit.  It is now my favorite version of TESB.

Here are some suggestions if you are planning on making another version

make the probe droids thrusters more blue when they are being deployed by the star destroyer

during the battle of hoth some of the blaster shots are really hard to see where as in the gout they are a very solid red color

threepio should say "ooh this is suicide" instead of "ooh this is suicide, there's no where to go"  i'm pretty sure that's not in the original theatrical.

when luke first sees yoda and points his blaster at him yoda screams.  I'm pretty sure yoda didn't scream in the theatrical version.

add hans (shadow)vest during the carbonite freezing part

i don't think luke groaned when he fell down the stairs during the battle with vader on bespin

lukes and vaders light sabers just look weird to me during the battle at bespin.  At times vaders saber is only two colors.  white and a plain red.  it looks the worst after vader says "only your hatred can destroy me".

when vader is kicked off the carbonite platform and says "aaaah" in the original theatrical version it was different.  It actually didn't have the deep tone that vaders voice has.

again these are just nitpicks that i'd love to see implemented.  I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this.  great job and i don't mind Standard Definition DVD.

While Adywan probably won't be making another version, you should definitely check out Harmy's HD Reconstruction of ESB which has the fixes you crave, and in HD!

Can someone please seed this torrent?

The demonoid torrent 3.97  gigs is stuck at 7%

The larger torrent 4.36 gigs is not being seeded at all.  I'd REALLY apreciate it.

Update:   Nevermnind I already found it at tehparadox.com... Thanks, Harmy!

Don't believe everything you have heard about them completely re-compositing the Hoth battle. That is rubbish. I proved this when i was starting the Hoth battle for ESB:R. Even in the SE documentaries when they mention they recomposited the cockpits to remove the transparency was just lies. All they did was lower the black level as the cockpits are all still transparent. There are one or two  very minor differences in the battle and that's it

That could explain why there are still obvious matte lines in the Rancor scene in ROTJ SE; they didn't re-comp the scene, they just monkeyed with the black levels.

BTW- you said the missing frames from the Wampa scene didn't come from the GOUT, but I'm still unclear as to where you harvested them as I assume they're missing on all post-1997 sources (?)

Are you kidding? The Rancor scene is very, very obviously recomposited. Trust me, I had the two versions layered over each other trying to salvage the matte lines and it wasn't possible because the objects are in different relative position. The same goes for the snow battle, 90% of the model shots were recomped. Maybe some of the cockpit shots weren't or they were simply recomposited badly.

Check out 005's comparisons.

I'd like to know this as well. Maybe Ady used SE background plate and rotoscoped Luke in from GOUT in the

missing frames, like I did it in my ESB using this reconstruction.

Maybe Mielr meant the '97 SE not the DVD version.

What they said in the documentaries is definitely not lies, it's just that the footage they show when they talk about it wasn't the footage that got recomped. Which is a serious mistake as they do a sort of before and after comparison of footage that actually was untouched.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

That has nothing to do with the Rancor though. They never claimed to have recomped the Rancor in 97. They only show the Rancor shot in the documentary when talking about recomping to demonstrate what a matte line is, no more no less. There is no difference in the Rancor scene in 97SE whatsoever, so I doubt Mielr could have meant that.

Yeah, I know.

The before and after clip I was referring to, was the snowspeeder shot.

No, i only used  the HDSE version to reconstruct the missing frames. No GOUT was used

So, did you cut up and animate Luke in those few frames? I understand that this shot was done in higher quality and more care as it will probably be used in ESB:R?

OK, I'm starting to feel a bit dense now. :-P

Forgive me, bit I still don't understand how the missing frames came from an SE source, if the frames are missing from the SE (unless they're NOT missing in the HD-SE version....?) Or, did you just repeat frames to make up for the missing ones?

I was under the impression that ALL the SE versions (SD and HD) were basically edited the same way and were all missing the same elements.

To be honest, now I don't know which version I was referring to. ;-)
I actually didn't know that there was a difference between the '97 and '04 versions, as I try to avoid both versions.

All I know is that the matte lines of the Rancor's leg were still very evident to me, in whichever version I saw last. This surprised me, because I thought they made a point of fixing that.

If you’re signed up for a newsgroup service with over 2000 days retention, it should be on a.b.starwars if I’m not mistaken. Someone also commented it being on tehparadox, but I’m not sure if links are still up after 5 years.
