SFX advice needed: Removing small background element from a shot.

My edit doesn't truly require much effects work, but there is one shot I need to fix. I've restructured the duel so that Qui-Gon and Darth Maul do not get trapped by the shield doors, only Obi-Wan does. The way I've edited this sequence requires that I remove Obi Wan from the shot where Obi can be seen running towards Qui Gon and Maul in the far background as they duel down the shield corridor. it's a couple of seconds and he's barely visible except for his swinging lightsabre as he runs. what's the best way to go about this? I have Photoshop, After Effects and Vegas, will I need other programs?

What do you find is the best way to work with after effects? Do you render out the piece of video you need from vegas, work with it in AE and then render the result and insert it back into vegas? Or do you take the raw video into AE, find the segment you need, do you work, render that out and insert that into Vegas?
