I rather liked the duel myself...the whole ending sequence (the Gungan misdirection, the team in the palace, the space battle) had great potential, although it is harmed by silly jar-jar, silly and accidental hero Ani, etc...

While we're on the subject of the duel....I know some of you don't care about fanedits but you might enjoy this.

I'm guessing the boring part.  If so I agree with Alex, Qui-Gon was far from boring.

Man, that pull-up sequence at 1:15 is hilarious.  Well done, sir.  Very well done.

He was quite fun to watch when he was putting on a show to trick other aliens, like when he's clowning around with Watto (don't forget to deceivingly roll your eyes as if you were just making up the bet on the fly, Qui-Gon - Watto might otherwise not believe it!), or when they were both scaring Jar Jar into showing them the city (hell, do I LOVE that little moment), or when he was teasing Padmé on Tattoine.

There was the occasional nice touche like his annoyed face at Obi-Wan's "lame joke", or when Obi-Wan starts talking about "symbiont circles" and Qui-Gon's subtly like "oh, boy, now he's all over it again again, he likes doing that doesn't he... but hey, let him be, that'll help convince this stupid fat bastard so heck".

Did emanate some fatherly warmth in his scenes with Anakin.

But that's like, dunno, 20 percent of the movie or something, and when your character's at his best and most interesting when he's putting on a show IN-CHARACTER, it's not really a good sign.

Most of the time, he just looks cool with his beard and says his lines in a boring, monotone way, just like everyone else. Pretty much every last bit where he's involved in Naboo's politics, he's a complete cardboard cut-out. Even in his discussions with Obi-Wan, or his scenes with the Council, doesn't he manage to put any character or passion into anything he says or does.

Sure, leaps above Padmé, he was, but other than that...

Sorry man, but the only character in the prequels who can be boring and make that look cool, is Palpatine. With him, you just know the whole time that he's faking, faking, faking it! 'Nuff sed.

That was awkwardly hilarious, Frink.

P.S: Yes, I was talking about the boring part.

Sometimes I can't tell if 2/4 doesn't understand what :D and ;) mean or if he's just as convinced of his own opinions as I think he is.

Quit with the lame clichés, T. We all know damn well that if I or anyone else were to come out and flat out say "the characters in the PT were awesome", or "Natalie Portman was so interesting the whole time, and in the climactic scenes in ROTS she showed such emotion", or anything as "sacrilegious" as that, you and the majority of this board would start ROFLing and thinking, if not saying, "no what an idiot, he has no idea what makes a good movie, or what good acting looks like."

What's the point of whining and crying about how "convinced someone is of his opinion" if you don't even bother with a counter-argument? I mean, for fuck's sake, at least I've posted a couple paragraphs with examples from Qui-Gon's performance... you know... put it up or leave it.. wait no, how was that again? °_°

As for the smilies, the "smirks" and "teasing tongue"s and "cordial laughters" are as ambiguous and multifaceted on the intertubes as they are in real life.

Can't understand how someone can say something nasty and dismissive while punctuating it with a :D, the "cheerful" smiley? Think of that black dude from Equilibrium. NUF SED!!!

The lack of a counter-argument is not a sufficient basis upon which to claim someone is "wrong" in his/her opinion.

NUF SED!!!

Oh, I guess the debate is over then.

Hey, as long as you fully and freely accept sentiments along the lines of "the prequels were awesome movies with great characters and acting" as valid "opinions", I guess one can't accuse you of hypocrisy.

Whatever the case, you sounded pretty incredulous in response to someone calling Qui-Gon boring, so dunno...

Using a strawman now?

Whatever the case, you sounded pretty incredulous in response to someone calling Qui-Gon boring, so dunno...

Maybe because I never heard that before regarding Qui-Gon...

Care to explain that?

Nothing to explain there, bud. You put in old, tired fortune cookie wisdoms, you sow dismissive, nonsensical Monty Python quotes.

Using a strawman now?

No.

Maybe because I never heard that before regarding Qui-Gon...

So what you have rather heard was stuff like "athe characters in the prequels were bland and boring, 'cept for Qui-Gon"? Really?

Okay, whatever. Why do you think his overall performance and acting in that film is engaging and interesting? As far as I'm concerned, most of the time he's just standing there saying his lines.

He's got his "moments", so has Obi-Wan, and even Natalie Portman has a few scenes where she's very okay. But overall?

Where'd be the fun in that?

I'm certainly not a fan of trolling actual debates with some substance, but when you spend a bit time elaborating your point, and then the dude just posts "yea, I meant the boring part", it's pretty hard to resist responding in an equally dismissive manner. I mean, what can you possibly say to that?

Well, yeah of course Grievous is better than Vayden, because Vayden couldn't be bothered to show up in the films, lazy bugger.

But Grievous being better than Vader. Nah, definitely not

So you know, I'm tired, I wanna blow off some steam, what if I decide to play this game? You know, I go into a Chinese restaurant or something... then I get all well-ahound cookie, I eaten it, then I open it, and look, there is a message within!!

It sez: "You saying 'nah definitely not'" ain't a valid rebuttal to my absolutely existent opinion that Admiral BoneToPick is better than your stupid Vayder, so what you got on me? Are you some kind of wise guy"?

Hey, that's what cookie says. Can't argue with cookie. What you gonna say to the cookie? Speak to the cookie! You talkin to cookie? You talkin' to cookie?!

I mean, it's like, dude, you're like your opinion's a fact, man! And it's really just your opinion! You don't have to be always right, you know?

Are you saying that you don't look at the fortune until you have eaten the cookie?  That's what I do.  I'm superstitious that if I don't eat the cookie first, the fortune won't come true.
