Here's another little something :-)

I would also like to repeat my request for any hi-res original matte paintings. I know they're out there because Ady used them for his ESB Reconstruction and I'd like to do the same to actually keep those scenes where he used them HD and not just an upscale of Ady's version with HD elements added.

Wow! That removal of the train and other SE additions looks pretty successful; however, the color of your new version seems especially blue. Are you planning on keeping it that color or is it just a work in progress?

Author

Yeah, the colours aren't final in any of the shots I post, I'll have to match them with the rest of the film when cutting.

All right; by the way, I noticed you changed the thread title. Are you going to have a separate thread for each de-specialized movie?

You never fail to impress Harmy, excellent work.

I used a hi-res matte painting for that shot, so you can actually see more of the painting than in the SE. That's why I want the other matte paintings. It also made me realize, that unless I get a new computer, which is not likely to happen any time soon, I won't be able to make any edits in a resolution higher than 720p, because the painting was 1600x1200 and the computer just wasn't able to deal with it properly, so full HD video is out of the question in After Effects for me.

720p looks marvelous on a 42 inch tv, so I'll be more than happy with it.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Yeah, he said he's gonna look through his HDD but he can't promise anything. He also said that he actually recreated some of them himself but some are scans of the real things.

mattes? There is a book called Industrial Light & Magic the art of Special effects By Thomas G. Smith

It is from 1986 It has some picks of matte paintings from ROTJ

They are not vary big so I do not know if they would be helpful but it may mean that there may be other making of Star wars books from before the SE that may have matte paintings.

I would send you scans of the book but I do not have a working scanner

That's fine. No mates were really altered in ROTJ, so for ROTJ I don't need them. But thanks anyway :-)

Don't know if you could find any mattes, but you might be able to contact the guy who runs this site. He posted on here many moons ago, don't know what happened to him.

I now have all the stuff I needed for Empire thanks to Adywan and OmegaMattman.

Ady was kind enough to send me all the mattes he could find on his HDD plus all the finished scenes from his ESB reconstruction that he could find in high bitrate mkv at 1024x576, which is pretty close to 720p, so I was able to use some of them as they were and use some of them for rotoscoping. It was a great help. Thanks Ady.

I also downloaded OmegaMattman's great 720p GOUT Empire upscale and used it for some rotoscoping and although it has some issues, it was a great source for this kind of work. Thanks Mattman.

Anyway, I'm like 95% done with all the shots on my "to do" list and now I've got a few shots on the "to maybe do" list.

Sounds like this is progressing really quickly. Looking forward to it Harmy!

Harmy does this mean Empire will be finished in a few weeks?.

I guess, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, I want to make it the best I possibly can, so I don't want to rush it too much.

Are you sure Lee? I'm not seeing any of the issues you mentioned, it looks great in fact!

Outstanding work once again Harmy. I've never seen the wampa scene in such high quality. I'm glad you're making such quick progress.
