Any news on potential x264 releases? There was talk a few pages ago of seeing how best to encode to that format. Those of us who ditched DVDs in favor of HTPCs would be most jazzed for the superior quality of x264 (or any modern codec really).

Of course, I fully respect the time and effort DJ already put into the project. So I'll take whatever is released and be happy.

Actually I have looked into it anymore since then, I have just been SO happy to finally get this done and out, but I will look into it a little more now, I am running some tests as I type this, so we will see.

Looks pretty neat. Although, it might just be something at my end but that MKV seems more compressed than the previous MPEG/AVI samples.

That looks unbelievably good!

Unquestionably the best-looking presentation of the OOT I've ever seen.

It's... watchable, absolutely watchable. I'm stunned.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Second.
Although it has been said before, it will probably end up all over the place.
I can wait.

So is this how the MKV file should be?

Love the MKV file! Yes, that is how it should be. Could be a nice addition to the DVDs, DJ.

dark_jedi, I've lurked on this forum for quite a while. I've been DL'ing from a.b.sw since the 90's and have seen *alot* of Star Wars stuff over the years.  If it means anything to you, I actually registered tonight to tell you that I have never seen any thing look as good as that MKV file you have posted.  It's...simply incredible.

Love the video quality in that clip. Though I noticed something a bit odd. at 7:30 into it as Leia is being escorted down the hall the stormtrooper on the left has some really weird black flickering going on with the top of his eyes. Is that from the source?

Great sample DJ.

A few things I noticed (but may be because of the source, not your work).   I watched it on my 65" using my HTPC.   The left edge of the screen has a green tint to it.  It bleeds about 1/10 of the way in.  There's also a small green tint area in the top right of the screen.  They are constant through the whole clip.  Also, the audio popped three times, each time when an explosion occurred: when the communications dish is destroyed, when the storm troopers blow down the door, and when the escape pod launches.  It could be audio clipping...  I'm pretty sure it's not my system as explosions are a common occurrence in the movies I watch and I've never noticed it.

@Tobar: I believe the flickering you see is DVNR.  I see it too.  The eye holes in the storm trooper masks kinda move up and down as the helmet moves down and up...  If that's not DVNR, then that might need to be fixed.

That being said...  even with the minor things I noticed...  it was great!

Oh my, that's simply superb! Jaw droppingly fine! I finally remembered how to play .MKV files on my pc ( I also checked and my DVD player can't play .MKV's) .

I'm really glad you are considering releasing these in MKV. For those of us that stream to our TV, there really is no substitution for the superior quality of an x264 release.

I didn't hear any problem with the audio or see any green tint through the whole thing, but I am watching on my PC, I can't play these files anywhere but my PC, that is why I am not a fan of them.

Did anyone else hear audio problems a or see this green tint?

DJ - For what it's worth, I played it on my reasonably calibrated 15" MBP hi-res laptop screen.  The green is evident there too, at least to me.  It is pretty faint (on both screens), but it's most noticeable when a white wall pans or a storm trooper walks off the screen.   The more I look at it, given that it's so constant and so close to the edge, I'd have to say it's part of the source, a defect of the transfer...  Am I crazy here?  Does no one else see it?

I see a little bit of a tint, but I think that's in the GOUT source.  I doubt anything an be done about it.  Can't compare at the moment, unfortunately.

Here's a few screen caps from a prior post of yours DJ (#1168 in this thread) that shows it.  I'm confident this is a GOUT thing.  I can't think of any post-processing that would cause this.  (I don't even know if it's possible to fix, though, without some high-tech digital grading software.  I'll just learn to ignore it.  No biggie.)

I retract my complaint about the green in the MKV.  It's in everything, so it's not an MKV problem.  MKV gets an A+ on video quality from me.

What about the audio popping?  Anyone else?

I wouldn't worry too much about the green thing, it seems very minor and I think I have seen it before in other GOUT sourced projects.

I have only tested this on my PC as well, and didn't notice any audio popping but I was only listening with headphones, not an av receiver.

I retract my comment about the compression earlier with mkv, seems my software player on my PC had some additional processing going on, which I have since disabled and now seems fine.

dark_jedi is the video bitrate higher on the x264 codec for the MKV compared to the DVD?

I compared V3 and PAL GOUT side by side to see how improved it was and it certainly is an improvement in terms of graininess and contrast, but I'm sorry, the green tint isn't there in the PAL GOUT, you can quite clearly see it on the crawl letters.  Also, what bitrate settings did you use? It seems a bit more compressed than the PAL GOUT.

I hate to say this, and I am not sure if you are hinting at your PAL is superior comment again like I have seen in other threads, but I am going to be blunt, you are full of shit, I have the Star Wars Trilogy retail PAL and NTSC sets and I just looked at the same pics as posted above, and throughout the film and it is to there(the green tint) you need to look again, and I am pretty certain your PAL set is no different than mine, I bought it from Amazon.co.uk

and the flickering is on the GOUT as well, PAL and NTSC so I do not want to read someone saying any different on that to, it seems to be where black hits white, because if you look at the black panels in the hallway just before the door explodes it is there in the right hand side as well, not sure if anything can be done with that or it would have.

The bitrate on the sample I am sure is pretty low, like I have said, I am still learning this, why not give suggestions, also can't you see what the bitrate is by loading that mkv into txmuxer? won't that tell you what it is?

Sorry to sound harsh, but this PAL & NTSC crap really gets me going, especially when you can clearly see the exact same thing on both.

I do have a MeGUI question though if anyone knows, I tried a sample encode last night, the video fed into it is 23.976, but once it finished, MeGUI changed it to 23.8095, why in the hell did it do that? and how can you avoid this from happening again?

Author
Time

No, no, no, I'm sorry, I wasn't implying anything in terms of PAL being superior, I just wanted to make it clear which set I'm looking at in case the NTSC was a bit different, is all. I wouldn't have thought the PAL set has better colurs, that wouldn't make sense, especially as it's just a conversion from NTSC anyway, I just know that when comparing stuff like that I have previously been asked whether I'm using the PAL or NTSC version, so I just wanted to avoid that by making it clear right away.

Here's what I mean:

Notice how the letters are more yellow in the GOUT. I don't want to be critical, it is a really fine job you've done there, just pointing it out.

I can't wait for it to be released.

I am sure that is because of the general color settings on this set, maybe the crawl suffered a bit, but the rest of the film looks much better, remember, I was NOT doing a scene by scene color correction, F that! I was commenting on you saying that the PAL set did not suffer from the green tint on the left side, YES it does, but all is good, I am happy with it and that is all that matters.
