WHAT A TWIST!
My favorite movie is the 2002 version of "The Time Machine." I went to see it in the theater like 3 times back when it came out. I still like to watch it a lot, especially with my friends. 2 of them are Philosophy majors, and we all love picking apart the subtleties of the movie. Makes for great times :)
But even aside from the social aspect, the movie itself is fantastic. Great story, great visual effects, FANTASTIC music. Oddly enough, "The Time Machine" is also my favorite book. But the book and the movie are so completely different in almost every way, that I appreciate each of them for their own unique stories.
^ I love the first 20 minutes or so of that movie. It totally sucks (to me) once he meets the eloi. I wish the "broken moon rains down on metropolis" stuff wouldn't have been cut. That sounded rad. I guess the timing of 9/11 sort of killed it.
I did, however, really like the ubermorlock's theory on why he couldn't change time. I don't think I've heard/seen that one anywhere else before.

That stuff wasn't cut... there's a scene where he stops the machine a few years after visiting the NY Library in which the moon is raining down in pieces and the city is totally destroyed and in flames. It's an awesome scene!
EDIT: I found this short clip from that scene on YouTube. The quality sucks, but it shows the moon cracking.
I do rather like North by Northwest, it has everything I like in a movie: intrigue, solid performances from every actor, and a director's cameo. It's Hitchcock exploring past his niche, while still using the techniques everyone loves in his other movies. Look to it, I charge you.

I should have said, "The end of that scene was cut." I think there's an animatic or something on the DVD that shows how the actual destruction scene would have gone.

Ah... gotcha. Although that may have seemed a little too stretched out anyway. I like the way it was presented because it's more scary. You don't know exactly what's going on... all that you see is that the world has turned into hell and the time traveler has to get out of there ASAP.

Yes and no, I tried watching it about 5 or 6 times because I really really wanted to like it (as I said... the novel is my favorite book). But the movie just didn't engage me whatsoever. The acting was terrible and the movie makes one big mistake that the 2002 didn't repeat... it's too much like the book.
Unlike the 2002 version, which goes off in its own direction, the original movie tries to copy the book a lot. So much so that the parts that are different feel like a complete slap in the face to the book. It makes is very uncomfortable to watch. Especially the Morlocks... omg... don't get me started on the Morlocks...

Possibly a top ten for me. I've been a huge North By Northwest nerd since before you were born. Even silkscreened my own North By Northwest t-shirt many years ago. I put this artwork an a shirt;

Regarding the topic; I could never come up with a single favorite film. Truth is, I'd be hard pressed to nail down that Top Ten list.

Everytime Guy Pearce went back in time to save his girlfriend, his past version was nowhere to be found.

LoL... you need to rewatch the movie. He only went back in time to save her once... and he purposely came a lot earlier to avoid his past self. He quickly takes his girlfriend out of the park and tells her "I'm going to come over later and be upset that you didn't meet me. But just remember that I love you..." etc etc etc.
So yeah, they totally address it.

The Vader\father part - pretty much right on the money.
The badass part - not really. I have, however, been a daily rider for 39 years Truthfully, I think I'm fairly easy going and non-judgmental.
Oh, and the hair - long gone. ;-) The facial hair is a different matter - man, I haven't been clean shaven since the 11th grade. I'll see if I can't get a current pic going. Might as well put a face to the name.

Man, I used to silkscreen tons of shirts. Almost all were album covers, but a few were film-related. It was a big hobby of mine from about 1980-1994 or so. After that it was just one a year or so.
I put a great deal of time into them and was very strict about remaining true to the source artwork. I was in graphic arts for many years, so getting film positives shot to use on the screens was easy for me. I just had to do the color separations myself.
The very last one I did was U2 - Pop. The one before that was Yes - Talk. I wore the Yes shirt to the Talk concert and several people asked where I got it, because it wasn't at the souvenir shirt booth.
Been a long time, man. These days you can buy just about anything. No need to make your own.

Target and Walmart have huge selections of Ts with all sorts of stuff on them - music, movies, etc. The internet has access to even more. I sometimes think about jumping back in and knocking out a few, but I can find just about anything I want online. Every T-shirt I wear these days is either Astros, Genesis, or Triumph.
By the way, Kev, very nice on getting to meet Eva Marie Saint.
I hate this question. I've been asked it so many times and still can never give a definitive answer. Maybe I should finally make a definitive list...gosh it would be long.
