That stuff wasn't cut... there's a scene where he stops the machine a few years after visiting the NY Library in which the moon is raining down in pieces and the city is totally destroyed and in flames.  It's an awesome scene!

EDIT:  I found this short clip from that scene on YouTube.  The quality sucks, but it shows the moon cracking.

I should have said, "The end of that scene was cut."  I think there's an animatic or something on the DVD that shows how the actual destruction scene would have gone.
