I agree that the idea to retcon an easter egg is stupid, however, I don't see it as universe shrinking (one could say that Vader being Luke's father is universe shrinking too). I bet someday we'll get a novel about that X-Wing and TIE Fighter in Ep. II...

I might be angry at the 'Falcon in ROTS if it had rescued Obi-Wan and he hid in the smuggling bays from a patrol of clone troopers sweeping the ship and then the one says "There's no one here!" and they leave and Obi-Wan pops out of the hold and tells the Young Han Solo pilot "Boy, it's lucky you had these compartments!" and then patted the ship as he walked off and said "I foresee you will do great things."

But he didn't. And the fact is that it changes absolutely nothing in the movie's plot. The ship is on the screen for a half-second, and it's not a huge stretch to say that these two ships just happened to be in a very popular (especially at that moment) spot at the same time. So it's just a neat thing to pause the movie for that half second, say to your friends "That light blur right there? That's the Millennium Falcon." and have them be in awe of your nerdiness and then go on about your life. It has no bearing on anything at all.

I posted my counter argument earlier, but I'll do it here as well.

From the beginning of Star Wars, Vader always had a close connection to Luke's dad.  They were friends, co-students of Obi-Wan, and Vader killed Luke's dad.  There's already a pretty tight link between Luke and Vader.  Making him his father, in my trying to be humble opinion, did not shrink the universe.  Or, at least, did not shrink it by much.

Luke and Leia, on the other hand...

Does this also mean that the falcon's brief appearance in Star Trek First Contact is also canon????

Yes. ET is canon. But not as ET, just as a senator from a planet within the Star Wars galaxy. We talked about that in some other thread.

I think Easter eggs are canon at the discretion of Lucasfilm. There's a lot of stuff that's a lot more stupid that isn't canon that the relatively minor things listed here. Like the Star Wars/Indiana Jones crossover comic.
