Censorship — Page 2

He's not the only one in the documentary world who does this. The Hughes' Brothers freely admitted that certain elements of American Pimp were staged, and Todd Phillips got into serious trouble over staged hazing rituals for his docu Frat House, before moving on to direct Road Trip, Old School and most recently Starsky & Hutch. This is not exactly news.

If you want to watch something mature with your kids watch Finding Nemo. A movie thats mature enough for adults and accetable for children.

I agree with you completely, Jimbo. The problem is that many parents these days allow TV to "babysit" their kids. They don't even know what their kids are watching. It's sad, really. People have kids and then forget they have to take care of them.

While I agree that using the DVD player as a babysitter is definitely a problem that could result, we also need to remember that there are people who would use such a device responsibly. The fact that such a device exists also indicates just how problematic the MPAA rating system is. The process is so politicised that the ratings become meaningless, besides the fact that a PG-13 is meaningless to begin with. "Parents Strongly Cautioned?" What the heck is that supposed to mean, anyway?

It's a gentle way of saying, "you'd better pay attention, jackass."

The problem is, a 5 year-old could still get into such a movie unsupervised. A strong caution is like being told off with no punitive consequences; it doesn't work.

I know, Gun. That was a joke. Actually, I think it should be directed more at the people who work in theaters, video stores, retail A/V stores, etc. They're the ones that need to pay attention.

Censorship should only be allowed if it is approved by the original filmmaker. For example Dumb and Dumber. The censored versions cuts out so much comedy. "That John Denver is full of shit man"

I don't even think that is justification for censorship. But the thing we've got to remember is that for censorship to truly exist, it must be a case where nobody has a choice. Thankfully, with this player, there is that choice still.

The big night of Nazi book burning, right? What was the name given to that night? I can't remember it.

Here's a couple of websites that detail the lies in Bowling For Columbine:

Michael Moore pulls every trick in the book, from lying about statistics and staging fake scenes (like the bank and wal-mart) to clever editing.

It was not faked. I've seen the whole footage that was shot in the bank. And the wal-mart, and k-mart, and the Charlton Heston interview, you belive it was all faked? Why would them allow it to be faked, anyway? Besides, you obviously don't agree with the movie's message, so uh, be careful with your .48 under your pillow.

Michael Moore: Why not use Gandhi's way? He didn't have guns, and he beat the British Empire.
John Nichols: I'm not... familiar with that.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

All I have to say is check out the websites I gave motti and decide for yourself. Just dont get duped by exaggerations, lies, and clever editing!

I say, just keep it in perspective. Every filmmaker has an agenda.

Motti, I actually found that same page. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that I remembered some name being given to that night much like the night when the Nazis started vandalizing the Jewish storefronts for the first time (Night of Broken Glass or some such). I could be wrong.

Ric, we do not claim that the scenes were faked (at least I don't claim they were). They were manipulated through the editing process to show just what Michael Moore wanted them to show. Anything contradictory, for the most part, was edited out. That happens in all documentaries. I took a class on it and we watched many examples of how one-sided docs can be. Even something so "safe" as Ken Burns docs have a political agenda even if it is not noticeable on the first viewing.

Me, I dig on WWII history as well as Victorian Era England. Don't know nearly as much about the latter, but I'm trying to learn so if anyone can recommend some good books, I'm open to it.
