I really didn't like it the first time I saw it.  I think I was unprepared for the mood of the film.

Love it to pieces now.  In fact, I'd almost IGNORE someone who hadn't seen it.

P.S. Tricky out acts everyone in the cast.

Sorry, my high school years were spent at different friends houses watching Friday.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I'm on in the fence about Chris Tucker in that movie, actually.  There are parts where he makes me laugh.

Author

Yep.  Me too.  Even the parts where he's completely annoying... I still enjoy his character for some reason.

I can't defend it, but that's my reaction to it.

Toy Story 3 *Spoilers* may follow:

I didn't cry.  There were two parts I found touching.  The "hand holding" and the box at the end.

I know I'm a cold hearted, senile old man... but when was I supposed to cry.  I mean, when did everyone else cry?  My wife was a little weepy at the end (the box) but why was that so sad?  She said it was sad because Andy was growing up.

First, I got misty-eyed during the "hand holding" scene, but I full-on bawled at the final scene (the "box" scene).  Here's why.

I feel like I was the perfect age for each of the Toy Story movies when they came out.  I was 6 years old when Toy Story came out, and I loved it.  I was 10 when Toy Story 2 came out, and I loved it.  And I was 21 when Toy Story 3 came out, having left for college 3 years prior.

Basically, I cried because I grew up with Andy, and seeing him going off to college, giving away the things he'd loved when he was a child and preparing to become an adult ... well, that resonated with me.  Hard.  It reminded me of everything I left behind when I left for college, and made me realize how much I miss being a little kid.

That's it in a nutshell for me.  It made me cry because not only will I never be a kid again, but even a fictional child I've related to all my life had to grow up, too, and he'll never be a kid again, either.

Thanks for the perspective, Ash.  My kids are too young for me to see them as Andy...

And I never grew up and got rid of my toys.  So...

I saw Evil Dead II for the first time last weekend. God that was unsettling. It was well made and had good acting and production value. That scene with the headless wife coming in the shed with the chainsaw freaked the hell out of me.

Agreed 100%

Oh and the most recent movie(s) I have seen are Tron and Tron Legacy.

Tron was very primitive (shows us how much we've progressed in terms of CGI), hated it the first time I watched it but loved it the second. Still, Tron grows on you and Jeff Bridges is awesome. It was a milestone of cinema: one of the pioneers of CGI.

Tron Legacy was cheesy, probably the start of a big franchise. Still, I enjoyed it. It was a good popcorn flick and good enough to make me see it again in IMAX 3D. Of course, the effects were good, and the story wasn't too bad. All in all, a relatively worthy (though somewhat disconnected) sequel to Tron. I doubt that 3 will be as good.

I watched Sorcerer's Apprentice. It's pretty good and gives you what it promises. It is pretty predictable in places, but it's fine. Only thing I hated was the ending.

Watched 2010

Overall, it was a pretty good movie. I couldn't help but cringe at how bad the compositing was, I don't know if that was original, or newly done.

In the end, it wasn't as good as Kubrick, but it was still a damn good movie.

What's your view on 2001? [if you've seen it]

I only saw 2010 recently and discovered that [at least] in my social circle people generally really enjoyed one or the other, but not both. I prefer 2010.

watched Roger Corman's galaxy of terror - it's craptastic.

Next I plan to see Roger Corman's Fantastic Four - as terrible as it looks i'm actually looking forward to it.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I was just thinking how I was on furlough from OT.com when I saw Tr2n- therefore I never discussed it here.  I actually really liked it.  I have no idea where the "no story" people come from.  I thought it had story in spades.

I find I appreciate Tron much more now as an adult than I did as a kid.  It's perhaps 1 part nostalgia and 1 part knowing a lot more about computers than I really did at the time.

I think 2010 is the better science fiction film

2001 is the better overall film.

The problem most people have with 2010 is the fact that it isn't Kubrick, and doesn't try to be. The movie moves a lot faster for one thing.

I've been considering doing a mild edit of 2010 that brings it a bit more in line with 2001 - that is, get rid of any sound in space, slow down the pacing a little bit, maybe remove some of the political bullshit (which wasn't in the novel, IIRC), and get rid of a lot of shots that just scream "EIGHTIES!"

That would be cool. I thought about making a version that at least fixed the awful compositing. Kind of a shame that 2001, a movie 16 years older looks better. Of course it's reputation gave it the better transfer and restoration. I just can't do something like that with my computer. If you do, make an edit, I would love to see it.
