Alas I can only work with what's there. It would be a painstaking process to try to stitch together a new order from Palpatine, and in all likelihood it would sound pretty terrible. Personally I'm fine with Palpatine giving the order to kill them, it feels like a Palpatine move to me.

I understand why you are using Japanese but I don't like when other languages are used, especially common ones like Japanese, French, Spanish, etc.  It always sticks out as too obvious to me, even if I don't speak the language.

I can understand that. I think it sounds really good with the Trade Federation so I'm going to leave it in. You can let me know how much it offends your ears by checking out this clip ;)

I think it works nicely. Not to mention it's not the first time a real language has been used for an alien one, Nien Numb after all :)

It would help if you made the Fed dialogue extend right to the end of the scene (dead gesturing is a problem with the theatrical version).

Perhaps you could just add that droids don't have a mind to read (we know sometimes they do but it seems to be a common assumption in the Star Wars universe).

As I posted elsewhere that line of thinking has broad implications for the whole PT.

Now that I have my video files sorted out properly I have some more progress on the edit. For some reason the video coming out of Vegas is a little on the dark side, and the positioning of the subtitles isn't matching up to what it is in the preview window in Vegas, but these are minor issues which I can fix later. So, here's the rest of the trade federation command ship sequence. Hope you all dig.

I just watched the rest of the sequence, Pagz. All the clips look very promising. They have much more of an OT feel.

I really like what you've done with the Neimoidians, but this is just an idea I had: Maybe have the head one talk English when talking to the Queen? It just seems more natural that they'd both speak a language they both understand, but them he'd go back to speaking Japanese to his "buddies".

One of the conceits of the OT I loved and which was lost in the PT was the notion that everyone understood each other despite language barriers. It's something I wanted to recapture in the PT by way of having aliens speak their own languages but still be understood.

The thing I see problematic with using the Japanese dialog is that if you listen closely, the main Neimodian says refers to "Sidious", which I believe is something you wanted to remove in your edit.

I personally don't have a problem and think it works great... but just a heads up :P

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Fair enough. I'm willing to allow that sidious might mean something else in the Neimoidian language so it doesn't concern me all that much.

For some reason Vegas seems to get glitchy when I render out videos with a lot of cuts in them. It seems to be including the very next frame after where the cuts are supposed to be. It makes the video look jittery. If anyone knows why this is happening I'd sure appreciate some assistance. Anyway, here's a little experiment in editing. Needs a little refining, but not bad for a first pass. What do you all think? Should I pursue this path?

That looked great. Was that dialogue from the trailer??

That dialogue was from one of the "tone poem" commercials that ran during the marketing campaign for episode I. They're available on the special features disc under trailers and TV spots.

I'm nearing the end of my edit now. I am currently editing the final battle sequence. Once that's done all that will be left is some audio finessing, subtitles and dialogue replacement, a final good render of my opening crawl and some additions to the end credits. Fingers crossed I'll be able to post it on fanedit.org sometime in March.

I've had a few issues with flash frames in Vegas as well, which I don't understand because it only shows up in the final render - it doesn't show up in the timeline.

One possible fix (don't know if this will help but I've heard it recommended just for general quality purposes) is to use an external encoder instead of Vegas.  I don't know what does a good job, however, so I'd be interested in what other people use to encode.

Knocked together a Poster for my edit tonight, what do you all think?

I like it! Are the hands supposed to represent Anakin's? The hands raised with lightsaber definitely makes it feel more OOT than the normal poster. All in all, it looks like a great poster.

It has the beginning of something really special there.

You might want to pinch some Batman Begins mentoring dialogue (if you can make it not particularly noticeable) to to iron out the folds.

Perhaps a few pitch changes in the trailer dialogue could make it match more with the slightly more energetic delivery of the original dialogue bookending it would make the blend seem more seamless.

Are there any shots of Anakin's face (especially his eyes) in the film that could be used to create cut away shots to break up the choppiness (which I imagine isn't going to be in the final edit anyway)?

I hope some room for Maul's "tone poem" can be found too (especially in the duel).

Light saber duels for me have always been more about what's going on in the character's heads and yet in TPM there is no dialogue to get even a glimpse into what the characters are thinking or feeling during that battle.

I know some people like that but for me it turned the whole thing into a dance routine.

All the tone poems have something to offer (if only the film lived up to them) but Maul's balances out what Yoda says about fear and there is so little Maul dialogue to play with.

I love Maul's tone poem. I couldn't find a good place to use it though... in TPM that is. However, since Maul returns as General Grievous in my edits I fully intend to use the tone poem in Episode III. And the best part is no lip synch required!

The choppiness of that experiment stems from 2 factors. The first is the limited amount of angles to work with in that scene, the second is trying to find decent matches for Qui Gon's dialogue. I don't want him visibly talking during quiet sections, nor do I want Anakin to appear to be talking at all. The other problem is the render, there are a number of flash frames that aren't present when working in Vegas that appear when the section is rendered out. Unfortunately, every closeup of Anakin includes his background.

That's an excellent idea about the Liam dialogue from Batman, I'll have to go back and rewatch it, see what I can use.

Yay! Even though it'll be awhile, I'm excited to see an edit with Maul being Grievous. I've always been annoyed how the villains kept popping up in the PT.

I have just completed the last video edit. All that's left is some dialogue track replacement, some subtitles, a high res render of the opening crawl, and some credits.
