Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!) — Page 76

I understand that, but it also becomes a more serious issue when captions for the deaf/hard of hearing are considered a "special feature" and not included on rental copies, as was the case with Up.

Hmm, I guess I can understand the reasoning (not that I necessarily agree with it, but studios have hated rental places from the get go), but it does seem rather shady to not even redo the menus or anything, but rather let you click the link only for it to say, "You want that feature?  You no can have that feature!"

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Yes, I agree.  That's shameful.

They obviously do that on purpose as a form of advertisement: Do you want to watch this? Buy the DVD!!!

And I agree that removing close captions is shameful.

From Blu-ray.com:

Star Wars

Star Wars: Original Trilogy and Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy will consist of four discs each – one for each movie and one bonus disc. Star Wars: The Complete Saga will have an additional special features disc, for a total of nine.

The remastering of the movies has been performed by Lucasfilm and will offer "the most recently updated versions of the movies," with "even more enhancements to the picture quality." When asked about Fox's answer to the fans that want to see the three original versions released, Marcais replied: "The versions that are being released are closest to George Lucas' vision. Other than that, no comment."

There is currently no date for a Blu-ray release of the six Star Wars movies separately.

Sales expectations are very high. For reference, the Avatar Blu-ray sold 5 million copies in the US and 4 million in the rest of the world. That's the "ceiling" on what sales to expect from a major Blu-ray release, and Star Wars is expected to raise that ceiling.

It's a good thing all of us are such doormats when it comes to Star Wars. Generally, in customer relations "no comment" isn't a great answer when someone has the temerity to ask what's actually on the thing that's up for order.

At least they're not calling the SEs the "original vision"

The thing that interests me most though if I'm honest, is the sound mix for each film in lossless audio and the potential benefits of using the blu-rays to further enhance fanedits.

I'll grant that higher quality source material will certainly increase the potential of fan projects, but having the eff'd up 2004 ANH mix in lossless does no one any good at all.  A higher resolution copy of absolute garbage is still absolute garbage, and unlike the image problems there's just no fixing it--it's beyond any salvaging.

I'm not the biggest fan of the '97 SE mix, since it has many unnecessary changes and rather less power than the original 70mm version, but if that was my only option for hearing any version of the movie I'd take it and be glad.  It still sounds like Star Wars, unlike the '04 which isn't even remotely recognisable.  And whatever even-more-remixed nonsense the Bluray comes up with will probably be even worse.

If only someone could figure out how to decode the theatrical DTS discs of the SE's that are floating around...

Star Wars will look greet on blu-ray hands down and all of the errors that where on the 2004 dvd's as far as picture and sound will be fixed for the blu-ray release. Some people say I'm crazy to think that will happen but it will trust me folks. Now the reason I think that both Fox and Lucasfilm have'nt released any details on the saga and prequel and original trilogy BD boxed sets is because they haven't started work on them and I think they will start work and when they are ready to release a date it will be either in May or June. So don't rush yo judgement on the Star Wars blu-rays until they are finished and they are out in September.

I'm really starting to believe that he is working for Lucasfilm. Otherwise, how can he be so stupid?

Because nothing says quality like a 4 month rush job. Isn't that what the 04 DVDs were?

What's up is an almost mind-boggling level of contempt for your customers.

This never happens:

"Hey head of Hostess, what snack-cakes will you be releasing, and when?"

"Hey P-Diddy, will there be music on your next CD?"

"Pardon me CEO of Ford, will next years cars be cars?"
"No comment. But be sure to pre-order."

According to what info Zombie was able to find it was done in 30 days by Lowry.  They were only the DVNR/ clean up people, Lucasfilm had already transferred them to hard-drives, working at 1080P from a new scan of the o-neg.

Lucas also supposedly fine tuned the color timing himself as a supervisor, but why are they so messed up.

There is no reason to believe Lucas went back and did a high res scan, for all intents and purposes even without direct confirmation i believe the blu rays will be from the 2004 master after Lowry's clean up was done.

1080 only for a blu ray release as the origin resolution is piss poor, they used that way back like 10 or 11 years ago  for some DVD release masters.

I agree. It sounds like they're leaving the door open for a future release. Especially after GL said, at the announcement of the set, that the updated versions take priority.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I wonder... is it possible that the Original Trilogy set will have the OOT, the Prequel Trilogy set will have the theatrical PT, and the Saga set will have George's New Vision version?

you're awfully dramatic

Lucas knows there's demand, and he's obviously at least a little bit willing to meet us halfway given the fact that he put out the GOUT. Sure it was a sloppy laserdisc transfer, but it's something, and that tells me that he's warming up a bit more to the idea that these films, in their original forms, do deserve to be preserved alongside his "true vision".

It's interesting how the True Vision changes at roughly the same rate as a traditional, Disney-ish 6-year home video cycle. What a cosmic coincidence.
