I was reading that when the 1st dvds came out in 2004, that george lucas took the vhs movies out of the stores. So do you think that he will take the dvds out of stores too, when the blu rays come out?

By 2004 weren't most VHS movies being phased out anyway?

VHS was pretty much dead by 2004, even here on Mexico (we're always behind). I don't think DVD has reached that point.

Yeah, 2004 marked the year my parents finally got a DVD player LOL.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I don't think they will until more people have Blu-Ray players than DVD players.

They said the GOUT set would be "limited" and would be pulled from stores after a certain amount of time.  That was five years ago, and I still see them on the shelf at Target all the time.  Not to mention the "trilogy" box set that includes them.

But... almost all of my DVDs were made in Mexico...

Not to mention blu-ray conversion frequently involves HD remastering which slows the spreading a lot, I think. The DVD itself had a slow start too, but the later quick and cheap digitalizations of previous VHS versions really boomed the format.

Ignorant of many things, but still a real bro.

DVD sales are still relatively high but I imagine anyone who wanted to buy Star Wars on DVD would have by now (at least once) :-(

They sit in the cupboard and only exist as justification amulets so I can watch fanedits and preservations now.

I don't think the 4-disc set released in 2004 is in print, but the 6-disc set that includes both the 2004 DVDs and the GOUT is definitely still in print, as well as the individual GOUT releases, which include the 2004 DVDs as disc 1 in each set.

Thanks for that explanation

I kept wondering who has gout? George Lucas?

I think I finally got a dvd player as a christmas gift around 2003-2004.

My last vhs purchase was Jurassic Park 3.

I bought a mad bunch of dvds but not Star Wars because I didnt want the SE ROTJ revised ending. Only seen the online pics-will never scar my corneas with the juxtaposition of Alec Guiness with the kid. Sticking William Holden or Jack Hawkins in there would have been less visually damaging.

Gout is unsightly, painful to suffer and is caused by over indulgence (George's).

Punch is the only cure.

Disappointing is probably a better word.

If they were home baked fan made laserdisc transfers being passed around for free some years back people would probably cut them a fair amount of slack.

As an official release they were a slap on the nose.
