I thought the TPM opening day digital projection (which only played in four theatres in the U.S., two in Jersey, two in Cali) was the exact same edit as the 35mm. Are you thinking of the pre-release version where Darth Maul's body doesn't split in half?

This is probably correct.  Having problems recalling a difference from the digital TPM and haven't been able to find something online.  As for the single Maul, wasn't the rating already set by the time of the charity screenings?  So wasn't the 'not split in half' only a few random screens?  Need to check forum posts to corroborate.

Wasn't it a possibility that there were some 35mm EMPIREs that made it out opening day for drive-in theaters?

I would guess that 35mm prints for all the films were out opening days.  I've made the assumption that 70mm would be the 'first published' because movies often premiere in LA and NY in those big classic theaters which have 70mm equipment.  But realisticly yes 35mm were out, and those versions will most likely be considered the 'first published' because they represent the biggest percentage of screens in first release.  But let's hear that from the LoC people before agreeing to this conclusion.

*EDIT*

Confirmation of the Maul 'not cut' in pre-release screenings.

Unfortunately, that second version did make it into a few pre-release screenings for critics and theater chain execs.

Here's another example of a production talking about the impact of the Original Star Wars but showing a Special Edition clip.

Twentieth Century Fox: The Blockbuster Years (TV 2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320996/

~41:55 they show the SE shot of Han running around the DS corridors and meeting up with the enhanced large crowd of Stormtroopers.

I think that's mainly because LFL won't give any original film footage from the OOT since 1997.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Fantastic work, man.  Might I make a suggestion?  Okay, the page is image intensive, and that's just fine, but I wonder if you can put some text in the corner of each image, stating what the source is?  I think it would help relieve any confusion that builds up as someone views the page.

Whattaya think?

Which page are you referring to?

Ah. Well, all pictures are the GOUT, except for two Technicolor photos at the introduction. I didn't make the text the clearest I suppose, it was done very quickly; that page isn't for the public, I made it just for the thread you linked to.

Found an SE picture in my Making of Star Wars. I'll look through it closer later and maybe put something together.

I may have helped save (the Making of) Star Wars!

So, here's to a great 2011! Thanks for all your support (and the emails of critiques).

P.S. Errata
Unfortunately, The Making of ESB went out with a few mistakes. We hope to fix all of these by the fourth printing. The biggest one-and if it's any consolation to fans, the one that has kept me up at night-is that a double-page matte-painting spread of the Falcon in the book is actually from Return of the Jedi, not Empire; and not painted by McQuarrie but by Michael Pangrazio. A host of strange circumstances went into that error, but I take the blame. Another series of small errors occurred when the publisher replaced my screen grabs from the original ESB version on DVD with screen grabs from the Special Edition DVD; Del Rey regrets the error, too.

We try and minimize all errors by having expert readers go through each of our nonfiction and fiction books, but mistakes happen. It's some sort of cosmic law against perfection.
This was posted a couple weeks after I messaged him about those exact errors. We can make a difference!

What I don't get is that he had everything picked out like I imagined, then they went through and replaced all of his frames with ones from the SE. In MoSW, there are a few images that are obviously from the GOUT (the original explosions, for instance). They even have the matte bars from the 4:3 image! The publisher knew better than to replace those, but went through and changed half of the images with SE ones!

So it's taken three printings to pick up on these?

I wonder when the fourth printing comes out?

I wonder if it will be labelled... "The UnRevised Edtion"? ;-)

This is great that Lucasfilm is identifying this issue.  Fourth printing sounds like demand for the book is good, wonder if this is meeting or exceeding expectations.  Maybe the RotJ book can gain a few pages because of this.

But I don't understand why Del Rey was even allowed to look at the SEDVDs when producing this book.

But it's great that people like doubleofive who took the time to write to them, got them to identify an issue.  and in this case act upon it to correct this 'small'.... situation.  Good job!

Wow, I would've hoped nothing from '97 or '04 would've made its way into that book. At least Kershner was still alive when those versions came out. There'd better not be a single thing from after '83 when Making of ROTJ comes out! Marquand passed away in '87.

That's awesome doubleo! =D

I just imagine a trenchcoated LFL employee breaking into Del Ray and substituting the SE screenshots in the middle of the night.

I guess it's progress that someone like Rinzler is acknowledging that it's worthwhile to make the distinction. For a while you had guys like Sansweet getting all butthurt when the changes were even brought up.

The 2004 shots were sought by the editors because the 1993 shots looked so shitty. I mean if you are a layout designer for a big visual-oriented coffee-table book, when you are used to high resolution scans and photographs this sort of thing, someone handing you a standard-def cap of the GOUT would probably make you think they made a mistake.

Most of the pictures are so small it doesn't make a difference. Look at the first example I posted in the Revisionism thread. SE on top of GOUT, can't really tell.

Dare we offer up 'Page Fixes'? We were unsure what the presentation method should be in the Revisionism thread, maybe zipped up or cbr 'Page Fix Supplements' could be put out. The 'Corrected Page' and the 'Original Page with Explanation Markups'...

For instance, the Making of Star Wars book, about 50 or so pages were released through Amazon.  Could start with those.  they weren't high quality, but it'll make a point.

Already sent my list to Rinzler. I'm sure if he laid out the book with original images that he still has them.
