I like the "softer" subtitles better.  It makes it feel like they were printed onto the film that was scanned in, as opposed to something that was digitally added later.

That is exactly why I think the tweak was needed, thanks for the feedback guys, and thank you d_j for posting a sample of them so all could see the new one. I don't know, maybe you could post an before and after, so people can see the difference.

The filters' purpose is to reduce flicker on interlaced displays, and it makes them look a little softer. There's no contest in my mind, the earlier ones look ugly in the edges sometimes, especially the simulated dropshadow, it's still not entirely perfect, but that's just my perfectionism that's speaking, and like someone else said on these boards, it's just subtitles For F**k Sake! ;) I cannot work on these forever.

d_j, if you still prefer the sharper subs, and want to use them, maybe for your own encode if not this, just remove the line, interlaced=true from the script instead of using the old script as the new script is also a closer match in some spots.

Actually after closer look, I am in agreement, I LIKE these new subs and that is what I am going to go with, the others were to nice, crisp and clean for what we are trying to do here, and CA's example was well put.

Thanks again for taking the time and doing them yet again.

Your welcome, the overall tweaks to the video in your sample looks good BTW.

Since sometime early tomorrow morning I am going to start the rendering of Star Wars, I wanted to look ahead for a moment, I am going to try just for the sake of a starting point the same tweaks on ESB, so what scenes for that movie should we focus on?

Author

I agree, I think the new subtitles look really good, very natural, like they are part of the film, which is the way they should look, of course. Nice job! :)

dark_jedi: The video is looking great. :) Are you making this an anamorphic video, so it will fill the edges of widescreen tv's? I don't recall seeing that mentioned for sure.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Yes it most definitely will be 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, the sub sample links are 16:9.

Subs look great msycamore!  They really blend in well.  Really crisp subs would have stood out.  But these look like they were there all along.

DJ, the colors look great.  It may be a fluke, but playing back the most recent sample on my little laptop speakers, it sounded like the audio was odd.  Sync was fine, but Han sounded a little pixel-y (which is a weird adjective for audio, I realize).  I'm having a hard time coming up with words to describe what I'm hearing... just that it's a little odd.   It may just be because of my laptop speakers, so feel free to ignore me.  But, if others hear it too, it might be something to look at.

Barring my crappy laptop speaker quality...  fantastic.

I'm at work right now, so I can't view this on a known good machine, but is anyone else seeing aliasing on the blurred subs? In particular, on 'y's?

might need a reference (unblurred subs) clip to compare.

Man my eyes must be getting tired, I don't see it, they just look a little blurred like msycamore wanted, I will look again in the morning, hopefully some others can look as well, time to go play some Castlevania Lords of Shadow.

I see what you mean, g-force. Also on the 'w's, looks worse unblurred I'm afraid. If I had redone them from scratch, and put them before the anti-aliasing part in your script, they had come out looking much better, but unfortunately I don't have the energy to redo them.

Anyway, I hope I don't have pissed you off with this, g-force. I love what you've done to the GOUT video, I just wanted to make alternative subs for my own viewing pleasure at first and your script was too good to be ignored when making them.

Yup, now that you mention it, I see jaggies on y's, w's, and v's.  There's jaggies on the crisp subs, too (moreso, actually).

Author

Sadly, those jaggies are pretty noticeable.  The colors of the scene looked really good.

Hold on, d_j, maybe I can reduce those jaggies with a different halo color to the main subs... I'll report back soon.

Edit: Aah, forget it, now I remember why I had the halo color set to transparent, if not, the subs get a thick black outline. I'm done tweaking, d_j.

So what do we want to do about these subs? and why is it showing up now, didn't it before to? so g-force's subs must have done the same thing, I am confused.

I want to start rendering this file this afternoon.

The new clip looks good. I like the subs.

I never would have noticed aliasing on diagonal letters if someone hadn't mentioned it here.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Author
Time

to be honest I didn't notice the aliasing while watching the clip in full motion, and how many times am I gonna go frame-by-frame?  Answer: none.

I say you're good to go with the render. Everything I've seen so far looks amazing.

Author
Time

Those jaggies you see on some of the letters was always there, they were even more noticable in the old script, wasn't the subs in g-force's original script located in the black bars? If so, they don't have that problem.

Both, Moth3r and satanika above have been very helpful with suggestions, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to fix that issue in the limited time frame or if their suggestions even solve those jaggies entirely, I've not had the time to look into it. I actually tested to put the subs before the anti-aliasing part, but they were still not completely gone with that method so I don't know if it is a limitation in the Avisynth subtitle filter or if it is a limitation of my knowledge, as it is now it doesn't have any halo color, but if I put that back, it doesn't resemble the theatrical subs anymore so...

Agreed, I didn't notice it until g-force mentioned it.  I support the new subs for two reasons now.  1) They fit better with the quality of the video and 2) The jaggies are less noticeable.

Author
Time

I forgot his were in the black border LOL, I am used to yours now, have you tried that script satanika posted? I am not sure how to implement it myself or I would try it, and if you need a little more time just let me know I can wait but need to know, at least ALL audio is done and ready to go with menu audio and menu's, so once video is done I can actually author this one up and be done.

Author
Time

No I haven't tried it out yet, I'm not really sure how to implement it either, I guess I can try it out, or if satanika can chime in and give some guidance and clarification behind it as I'm a really novice when it comes to it.

Anyway, I'm willing to improve it if you think it's worth it, and if everyone else think so. I'll see what I can do.

Well after the closed door discussion between msycamore and myself, we have decided that the subs are staying as is, it is barely noticeable and it is not that bad in motion, if this was truly a major issue, this should have been brought up when we(msycamore and I) first added these in quit a while back and I was sharing samples, and at least for me, who cares if there is a very, very minor flaw in the subtitles, hell the video is far from perfect to LOL, so for the record I am going with msycamore's softer subs and I am going to render now.

@msycamore, THANK YOU very much for doing these for this project and doing them for the 97 SE V2 Set also, I really appreciate it, Great Job!
