Those screenshots of the tweaks look amazing. I almost completely forgot that the source was GOUT. 8)

Btw, do TESB and ROTJ need any color tweaking?

Great work and fine tweaks.  Ship it!

Actors have stage makeup applied to their entire face and possibly neck.  Meanwhile hands and chests do not receive makeup.  When looking at skintones, bear in mind that the face will always look a bit unnatural because it is all covered in foundation makeup (yes, even on the guys).  To see real skintones you would have to look at the hands or on Solo's chest, for example.  Anyway, that's why faces always look a little tan or odd - because of the stage makeup.

I am pretty sure they do, but we will see when we get to them, I want to do 1 film at a time, I made this mistake before doing to many projects at once and getting a bunch of files mixed up and misplaced.

I think those new screen shots look great. :) And I hope they are included in the V3 DVD set.

Compared to the technicolor shots we've seen, the whole GOUT looks rather dark, and in some scenes like the cantina (which is naturally darker to begin with) it's more noticeable. But since no scene-by-scene adjustments are being made, don't worry about it. Just include the latest color correction settings so we are at least closer to the vibrant colors of the theatrical appearance, while minimizing any redness to the flesh tones. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Hmm... I'm not sure what to think.  There seems to be some inconsistency between tweaked screen caps.  For example:

Post 1134:

Post 1159:

I like the tweaked shot in post 1134, but not the one in 1159.  The tweaked pic in post 1134 seems to boost the red only, and does so just nicely -- it looks vibrant -- whereas I find the tweaked pic in post 1159  too dark and "dingy" for lack of a better word.

Do you recall what exactly you changed between the two d_j?  Which one are you (and others, for that matter) leaning toward?

If you kept the settings from the first pic, I'd favour the tweak.  If, however, you were to go with the settings from the second pic, I'd have to say I favour the untouched V3.

EDIT: After looking at the shots again, I'm really starting to think maybe just leaving the colours as is would be the safest approach.  I dunno... I guess I should just add my voice to the chorus that's saying "use your best judgement."

+1, the new ones are too yellow. The tweak in post 1134 looked better to me as well :-)

I've reposted the screen caps in question below in an attempt to make it easier for people to see the differences between them.  By right clicking and opening each in a new tab/window, you can quickly flip between each picture.

For the first question I took the contrast out and did a different approach, and yes I remember(I hope) what I did in that pic, I keep trying new things.

and for the next question, I am going to go with the majority here, so if they like it with the current tweak, that is what it will be, but I am not 100% done messing with this yet, that is why it is a very nice thing g-force did by posting his scripts on the first page of his thread, if people are dead set against it, there is always the option to do it yourself, but like I said, I am not final yet, but getting close.

Thanks for the update d_j.  Looking forward to seeing a few more samples.

EDIT: for what it's worth, I'd suggest backing off on the red just a weeee bit on the tweaked shot from post 1134.  But then for all I know you might end up with an image that looks just like the original.  I'm just worried about the image leaning too much to the red is all.

Not following you, what are you getting at with that statement?

Televisions (especially Sony's) tend to push red anyway.  So be careful about too much red, since most tv's will further push the reds.

  • To me 1134 looks kind of rubbery, as though the actors were plastic action figure dolls.  The skin looks rubbery plastic.
  • 1159 is nice, but if you look at Han's black vest, you notice that the blacks are a bit crushed on Han's right lung side (our left, i.e., the side nearer to Chewy).  You can see more detail in the dark vest in the As Is.
  • As Is looks a little bit purply and a little flat due to the low contrast.  But bumping up the contrast will crush some of the blacks, as seen above.

I'd recommend using a soft touch with the tweaks.  1159 is near perfect, even with the slight loss of detail in the dark areas.  It's always a trade-off between the improved depth you get with High Contrast, vs the improved detail you get with Low Contrast.

I'd vote for either 1159 or As Is.  Or maybe halfway in between, i.e., dial back the 1159 tweaks a bit.  But at this point you can't go wrong with either.

Nowadays most tv's are LCD's and imho LCD tv's have exaggerated color representation anyway.  So even if the DVD is tweaked perfectly, the LCD TV will turn it into cartoon colors.  And most tv's come with default settings that are very aggressive, making the image "pop" with over saturated colors and high contrast.  This sells tv's in the store, but it's not very accurate color representation. Don't sweat the final tweaks, because they will be lost on most tv's.   Err on the gentler side, because most tv's will add Contrast and Saturation, especially reds.

For the record I am actually leaning more towards the 1159(which is the latest tweak) myself.

Hmm. Don't forget that when you mess with the brightness/contrast/gamma, all of the mattes get really annoying. Took me months to get those right.

What scene would you say this would show the most, because I certainly do NOT want to mess up any of the hard work you put into this.

Well, I'd like to add that I am one of those that definitely prefers 1159.

Taking into account Luke's uniform, his hair and his skin, it looks quite balanced to me there. 1134 looks too red to me when looking at these details, especially also Han's hands look too tanned, whereas 1159 they look more normal.

I guess I'll go ahead and vbangle, since there is a first time for everything.

I believe he just meant that since you already did the hard work of syncing all the audio, whatever you decide will be fine with him.

(note to self, I must put happy faces in cryptic posts)

What I meant to say was that you've done all the hard work....after all the work YOU''VE done to sync up all the various sound tracks to the GOUT, its going to be realitivly easy for someone to make their own verions...

We owe you a huge debt my friend. Who in the Hell would have the time or patience to sync up, what was it, 12 or so different tracks spanning the 3 films? Dam that was a crap load of work and you did it. Thank you.

By combining G-Force's script with your synced up tracks we've all got it made.....

Well, I was on the right track, even if I got the details wrong. :p

Watched both clips.  I prefer the video inside "Test Accepted Tweaks.rar".  If I read your post correctly, DJ, that video clip comes from the "1159" tweak.  The "test.rar" looked too red.  My opinion remains the same, "1159" is the way to go.
