RETURN OF THE JEDI - ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION

This is a little Leia to Adywan's Luke. It is an anamorphic reconstruction of the original cut of ROTJ using the HD broadcast of the 2004 version, the GOUT and GKAR German anamorphic digi broadcast of 97SE.

Here is what is changed back to the original version:

FYI: The whole ending celebration is completely back to the original state and the whole film is colour corrected - Here's a colour correction comparison, left is SE right is the RECONSTRUCTION:

The colours are not 100% faithful because it's a JPG but it gives you the general idea - it's pretty subtle for the most part.

It's been a while since I watched ROTJ. It looks exactly as I remember it, only in better quality. Amazing work!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Thanks for the info, Harmy - looks like I'll have to re-encode to get it to work on my player.  Not a big issue, though - it means I can get rid of the black bars, too!

So what was actually not changed from the SE?

Ignorant of many things, but still a real bro.

I'll have yet to see about that when I finish the PAL DVD9 and then I'll decide. But unless there's an overwhelming demand for it (which in terms of this edit seems to be 3 and more people ;-D ) I probably won't do it. There will also probably be no PAL DVD5 either.

I was kinda hoping for hairy hen's latest 5.1 mix. Will it sync if I do it myself?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Like Erikstormtrooper, I'm curious as to whether Hairy Hen's latest 5.1 mix sync to the NTSC DVD5. If put in a program like MuxMan, will a delay need to be programmed in to have the mix sync to the video?

My mixes were made to synch with the NTSC version of the GOUT.  There's apparently a very slight difference in the frame count, but it's quite possible that any synch error could pass unnoticed if you're not looking very closely.  No delay should be necessary.

I will most likely make a single layer dvd for myself with the music-edited 5.1 muxed in, but also burn stereo versions for some friends and family who do not have surround systems.  The 5.1 tracks are 448 kbps, while Harmy indicated he's using 224 for the stereo--depending on the size of the video some very slight recompression might need to be applied, but it probably wouldn't be too noticeable if it was only a small amount.

Hamry,

I watched this tonight and must say wow, absolutely amazing! Thank you for your hard work on this.

My GOUT DVD's will only collect dust now.

I just watched a few scenes of this and it looks fantastic. On behalf of all of us who can't undertake something like this ourselves, thank you!

Anything that is not here. Mostly it is just things that are practically un-noticeable when viewing the film normally.

Thanks to EyeShotFirst Oldschooljedi, canadianbs101 and ThiefCobbler4ever for the kind words :-) I'm glad you like it.

As to the sound mix, like hairy_hen already said, it should fit his 5.1 mix without the need to set any delay, only then it won't fit a DVD5 AND I definitely wouldn't recommend recompressing the video of the NTSC DVD5. Chainsawash should be fine with recompressing the MKV.

Not to be a dick, but I noticed a video glitch in the dancer-killed-by-the-Rancor scene.  The screen goes black for a split second right before the shot of Threepio turning away in horror.

Note that while I haven't watched it the whole way through, that was the only issue I've noticed (well, that and the subtitles not quite being what I'd prefer, but that I can live with), and everything else I've seen so far looks absolutely, utterly fantastic!

Thanks, yeah, I'm aware of the 2 black frames glitch, it was already in the PDE but it's really minor IMO.

I totally agree. Between this and Adywan's ESB reconstruction the only GOUT I have any use for is for SW. And at the moment I think I'm using the GForce version or pwned I can't remember.

Unfortunately SW is my favourite film and the one I watch more often. I know Adywan said he'll be doing a reconstruction of it in the future, which is awesome, but the sad thing is no matter how many years that is off in the future he'll still surely beat a Lucasfilm restoration.

Any way, I downloaded the DVD5 two nights ago and sat down last night with a glass of wine intending to scan through it on my 50inch tv (previously only watch the mkv on my computer monitor). Well I ended up watching almost 3/4 of it instead (scanned through the battle of endor) with a couple of extra glasses of wine. Pretty epic.

I had the same wow reaction as watching Adywans ESB reconstruction, was it last May? Sure it's not perfect but neither is Adywan's and what in this world is. But it's pretty damn close to my personal viewing preference without being a true theatrical restoration. And with Lucas being such a shithead it's much more than adequte as my go to for watching ROTJ.

I also noticed the black frames already mentioned. I just thought it was my dvd/player being a bitch.

A tiny issue, that may not even be an issue:

This shot looked weird and out of the ordinary noticeable. Is it the compression that's caused it? I checked the mkv and it's the same. Maybe the DVD9 will clear it up. Watching it in motion it looks a bit blocky.

Unfortunately, no, it won't because I just checked and it's a glitch that is already present in the master. It seems something's gone wrong in adding the subtitle into this shot and I didn't notice it during the editing, because when you edit, you only see the video in a small window, so things like this are far less noticeable :-( Hopefully these small glitches won't ruin anyone's enjoyment.

Eh, if I can enjoy the gout with all it's glitches I don't have a problem with this.

I thought it was worth pointing out in case you were not yet aware of it.

To you people who already have this, what do you think about how the ending celebration video looks? It's completely GOUT but the video quality of the GOUT fluctuates quite a lot and I thought this was one of the scenes that looked really good, so as there weren't many shots I could have used from the SE, I decided to make it all GOUT, instead of intercutting between better and worse quality all the time.

Author
Time

Marvelous work.

The Celebration looks pretty good, I would say the only parts that are really noticiable are some of the shots of the Sail Barge. Lapti Nek also looked quite good for the most part.

Author
Time

Yeah the Max Rebo band sequence looks pretty good. To answer your question Harmy, the GOUT ending video quality looks good.

I could tell straight away it was GOUT unedited but the image quality is above average and the SE editing of the ending is so messed up your solution is probably the way to go.

Looking at OO5's comparison images you'd have to cut between SE and GOUT mid shot to pick up the extra frames that have been left out.

Yeah, that's exactly the problem, most of the original shots are there, but they are shortened, so I couldn't use them because a change in quality in the middle of a shot is far more obvious than between shots.
