I did suggest earlier that Obi-Wan had a apprentice which he had to let go in favour of Anakin (by switching the lines directed at Qui-Gon to Obi-Wan and maybe showing a young pupil being led away by the council).

Well the betrayed and murdered line (at least to me) suggests that Luke's father and Darth Vader personally knew eachother, possibly faught alongside eachother, and that it was a betrayal with real emotional weight to it. I think in my dream refilming of the prequels, Obi Wan would have to have 2 apprentices. One brash and impatient (who I'll refer as Hayden) the other more talented and the more favoured (Anakin) who seems, on the surface, a better person.

Maybe Anakin is common enough a name for both pupils to share the name?

It could be the Star Wars Galaxy version of Mohammad, James or John.

Ah yes, but you have to remember that  screenwriter would never name 2 significant characters the same name, however realistic it may be "in universe". We have a challenge in fan editing in not only fixing George Lucas's non sensical story and universe, but also retaining filmic conventions too. :-p
