I'm pretty sure it's true. I don't think too many retailers had abandoned VHS by 2004.
On the 3rd page of this article, the guy says that in 2004 SW Trilogy came out on VHS "just to make sure those without a DVD player in 2004 wouldn't feel left out, a VHS version of the trilogy was released digitally mastered in THX." Is that true or is the guy just full of it?
Maybe. Episode III was released on VHS on UK, IIRC.

Doubt this is real. I would've heard or seen it.
I stand corrected, at least officially. No mention of it here:

Don't see it.

There are some AotC VHS but no RotS listed.
No mention of RotS VHS either. And this one was released.
There is a ROTS VHS on ebay.co.uk but it could be fake or a wrong listing.
And I definitely remember seeing the OT 2004 SE VHS up for grabs from amazon.co.uk for a couple of years. It had different artwork on the sleeves from the DVD set.
No VHS tapes where released in 2004.
The last VHS release of the OT was in 2000 in both the UK and US. It removed the "Special Edition" tag and listed the trilogy as Episode IV-VI. It also featured a 10 minute Episode II feature. Details can be found here:

Episode III was released in pan-and-scan ON VHS in the UK only. No VHS tapes where ever produced for the US market. I doubt it but there might be a NTSC Episode III tape released in Japan.
Edit: Just checked Amazon UK and they list a OT VHS boxset released November 11, 2002. This might be a re-release of the 2000 boxset released to coincide with the DVD/VHS release of Episode II.
Your brain just makes s**t up!
A fate worse than death? Having your head digitally replaced with that of Hayden Christensen!
The ROTS PAL VHS's were definitely released I purchased a couple of copies for friends to finish their collections.
So if they aren't the list the list isn't very comprehensive.
That doesn't mean the 2004 SE was released though, I certainly have never happened across any such sets.
This fellow I met over the HTF has a pretty impressive video collection. If he doesn't have a copy, it may not exist! He's got the Episode III VHS.

He has vowed to buy the behemoth Fox 75th anniversary DVD set, (and tell the world what version of Star Wars lies within) but I haven't heard anything yet.
Where were you in '77?
I can't see the Executor VHS PAL tin set
there SilverWook so even that list (unless I've missed it due to the late hour) isn't entirely comprehensive either.
Episode III had no USA release on VHS. But it was released in the UK.
Some people just to complete their shelf bought a copy, unwatchable in ntsc players just to be completists.
The 2004 special edition never came out in the USA on vhs.
The re-release was of the 1997 version, around the time episode II was released.
