John Wayne IS Rooster Cogburn.

So is Jeff Bridges. He also gives a deeper and better portrayal of Rooster Cogburn as he was originally written, which is what I prefer.

Jeff Bridges is The Dude.  End of discussion.

Last two movies:

Zombieland - I had a lot of fun watching this.  I might have to check out Shaun of the Dead now, which I wasn't that interested in before.

Paranormal Activity - I liked the last 15 minutes or so, but it was a chore to get to that point because the couple was so damn annoying.  Hmm, kind of like Blair Witch...

SotD is at least 1000000x better than ZL. Two completely different takes on the zombie/comedy genre, with SotD taking the top spot for me mostly because the zombies are secondary to the actual plot.

We'll see - SOTD is in my Netflix queue now.  All I know is I literally lol'd several times during Zombieland.

Just keep in mind they are very different. I think I would have liked ZL a lot more if I hadn't already been in love with SotD and I expected ZL to be more like it. Don't expect SotD to be like ZL, or you'll be in the opposite boat I'm in.

From what I remember of the trailers, SOTD isn't really a zombie movie, but a comedy that happens to have zombies in it.  ZL was more like a zombie movie that had several very funny/bizarre parts.

I think.

How can you defend the unneeded remaking of a classic.

Because I saw it and thought it was much better.  It's the story from the book, not the 1960s take on the story, which was reworked to suit John Wayne and softened to appeal to a wider audience.

you assume being closer to the book = better movie.   That is not always so.

He just said he preferred it in this particular case.  I didn't see any blanket statement like that.

he said it was better because its the story from the book, not the 1960's take on the story.   this assumes that being closer to the book = better movie.  While that is often the case, it is not always true.

"ME AND ORSON WELLES"

Fun movie, great actor as Orson Welles.

But Zac Effron must go home at night, put his DVD of ROTS in, and think "Gee, I wish I had the charisma, screen presence, and subtle range of emotion that Hayden Christianson has."

"Casino Royale"

and

"Quantum of Solace"

I love these films more and more each time I re-watch them. Watching them back to back was a lot of fun.

Home Alone

Yeees -  I realize it's a silly Christmas movie. For me, it's a guilty pleasure.  Without going into a lengthy dissertation;  I have very strict, self-imposed rules about watching Christmas movies any time other than December - I don't do it.  However, for reasons I can't figure out, I was weak and watched it this past weekend, a day after December.  It's now put away until December of this year.

Is this toothbrush approved by the American Dental Association?

I don't know.

Well, could you please find out?

Duck Soup was the last movie I saw, and this is the last time I will ever watch Duck Soup.

I seriously hope the other Marx Bros. movies aren't this bad.

Didn't Shaun of the dead coin the term romzomcom?

Romance / Zombies / Comedy.

I watched Home Alone on December 24.  Given that I used to design burglar traps for my house when I was kid because of it, the fact that I like the movie shouldn't come as a surprise.  lol

The film's music is rather good also.  I always felt it gave the story a lot of extra depth, although for some reason I didn't realise until relatively recently that it was actually John Williams who composed it.

And soon the darkness. [2010 version]

Boring and predictable - avoid at all costs. Hard to believe that Karl Urban is desperate enough between Star Trek gigs to star in something like this.

Indeed. Too many feathers, I think. Kinda spoils the flavour.
