Original Memories Vs. New Nightmare

 (Edited)

In my opinion, when a movie is altered in any way (added scenes, altered scenes, etc.) , it then becomes a different movie. What I would like to see on DVD is the complete original Star Wars trilogy. If the new versions of those movies are to be released, they should be a supplement item.

When I think of Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” painting, I don’t remember her wearing a fancy hat that may have been popular many years later. I remember the painting in it’s original way!

When I listen to music, the songs I listen to evoke fond & happy memories of times past. That effect would be eliminated if someone were to add anything (synthesizer, extra vocals, etc.) to them because they believe they can improve the original version. Not so!!!

What we are dealing with here is a classic movie series that needs to be preserved in it’s original state.

These are the versions I remember & cherish.

These are the versions that stood the test of time.

These are the versions I will wait in line at my local video store for.

Even though Steven Spielberg digitally updated his “E. T. The Extra Terrestrial”, he smartly chose to simultaneously release both old & new version. Maybe George Lucas will listen to his buddy Steven & do the right thing.

Maybe we need to contact Steven first & invite him to get involved. If the original Star Wars trilogy is to be digitized to the DVD format, it must be done correctly the first time. Thank you.

true, although your title is a bit harsh, in my opinion, but other than that, you are correct.

I think Bill might have been aiming for a synergy with the Freddy Krueger flick of the same name... Anyway, I do agree with you on the fact that the film becomes a different beast when it is altered after the fact. This gets back to the point that we need both versions to be available, which is the overall point of this site.
It's funny that you should mention the alteration of music as an analogy. I don't know if you heard anything about this, but back in the late 80s, Frank Zappa made remasters of some early albums where he went back and rerecorded the drums and bass because the original tape had deteriorated and the oxide had fallen off. Fans (much like us) were outraged and it wasn't long before he released remasters with the original backing tracks intact. We can only hope that GL follows the advice and example of Spielberg and releases both.

By far it is. It's the way Jabba The Hutt grovels at Han Solo for his money. The movie would have been better with Homer Simpson and Mr. Burns. Montgomery Burns may be scrawny but he doesn't whine for his money, he demands it.

On this whole Simpsons bent, does anyone remeber the issue of SW Insider that featured the Simpsons characters playing the roles in SW. All I remember is that Burns was Emperor Palpatine, which fits, of course.

Now I'm doubting my memory. Apparently though, there is a Bongo Comics Simpsons issue featuring a SW parody. I'll see if I can find this.

I'll use my money on Simpsons and wait till November for the 4 disc TTT. Don't need both.

You don't?
Wouldn't you like to have both versions of the film?

I don't know about Bossk, but I can understand why he is doing that. I for one got the FOTR EE before the TE because I wanted to see if I liked the EE so much that I wouldn't care about the TE. It turns out, I love both I so the TE. Now I will buy TTT TE opening day, as well as the EE. It is a bit of trial and error, at least the first time it was.

Not in this case. I actually like the extended versions better. They tell so much more of the story. I loved seeing the enchantment in Sam's eyes as the elves marched past in the woods. I love Galadriel's gift scene. I love how much more compassionate Boromir comes across in the extended.

I said this in another thread that I don't really consider it "revisionist cinema" when footage that was originally filmed by the director is reinserted into the flow of the movie. All that's happening is that they're making things right. It wasn't the director's choice to edit out the scenes so much as it is the demand of a producer or the distribution house for the sake of time, etc.

I prefer the director's cut of The Abyss and don't even watch the other anymore. Same with the original Highlander. The original versions of both movies make no sense anymore after seeing the extended.

Besides, like I said before, I'm not rich and I've got to pick and choose what I buy. I would rather spend my money on The Simpsons s3 and save for the Extended version of TTT.

Doesn't really bother me. I can always rent the regular edition when it comes out. I just don't see the need to own both copies.

In my case, I got the theatrical edition for free when my bro bought the EE. He didn't see the point in having both, and I'll wait until all three films are out before I spring for the EEs.

I was buying everything SW that came out on VHS for a while until I just realized how useless it was. Buy one, and the rest sit around collecting dust or suffering from magnetic drop off. I'll definitely be pickier with regard to what I buy on DVD if we're given a choice.

Sorry, but I must side with Bossk on this one. As far as SEs of movie titles go, if I just want the movie with no special features, that's what I'll buy; otherwise, I'll wait. There's no point in having two copies of the same film in the same format. I got burned on Tron and will not get burned again, except for when I picked up the CE of A Bug's Life. I think MGM has the right idea by keeping the original releases out at the same time as the SEs. That way, both types of fans of a particular film can get exactly what they want.

How did you get burned on Tron? Are there two versions available? I thought there was only one.

I initially thought I got burned when I bought Monty Python and the Holy Grail and, literally two weeks later, the SE comes out. Pissed me off until I discovered there's virtually no difference.

I am about to be burned by Casablanca, though. That was one of my first DVDs and now a 2 disc set is going to be coming out with deleted scenes (not spliced back in to the best of my knowledge). I was just about to buy Scarface also until I found out late last week that it's being rereleased in November in a 2 disc set. The same goes for The Seven Samurai which I was about to buy until I found out Criterion is rereleasing it. Maybe it'll actually be cheaper (sheeyah, right, and monkeys might fly out of my butt).
