Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released) — Page 102

I think people give Lucas too much credit when they see metaphors in what he writes. In all likelihood, they were probably an excuse to insert more CGI :P

Glad you liked my video, though I can't say I've executed it very well. This is how the scene appears in my cut (at the moment anyway)

I met a guy recently who got to work with Lucas a while ago.  He said they got into a discussion about releasing the OT and George just couldn't be made to see any point to it. He's really agin' it, it appears. He wishes we'd all just accept the current version as his and forget that one with the bad effects that he couldn't finish the way he wanted.

My friend said they didn't talk about fan edits.

Not new info, but to get it from one degree of separation was interesting. Now you got it two degrees separate.

Otherwise, working with George was really pleasant, according to my new BFF ;-).

See, if he has the guts to ask him if he would allow someone to reshoot the prequels! =)

haha. I hear ya.. But honestly, I actually long for the day that maybe Lucas lets someone try (Probably won't happen) or he passes, and his kid sells the rights to someone who will do a proper prequel trilogy.

It doesn't kill your hobby! =)  These prequels will always exist! lol

It's weird. For me, the most important ingredient in these prequels is Lucas. If these came from anyone else, they'd be "fan fiction" to me.

It's the Lucas x-factor that makes these so interesting. We puzzle endlessly over why he did this and that. But HE did it, and that makes them interesting.

I've never been able to enjoy the "extended universe" stuff. The Timothy Zahn novels felt wrong within a few pages and I stopped reading.

"Remaking" these would probably work for me if the original story was kept and simply made more dramatic (i.e. have the Jedi Council actually DO stuff, have consequences for Qui Gonn's defiance, maybe reverse the TPM dynamic so that everyone EXCEPT Qui Gonn thinks Anakin is the chosen one instead of making Anakin a jedi even when EVERYONE correctly thinks he's bad, etc.)

The way things are going, I bet we can expect some pretty decent unofficial remakes within 20 years. That will be interesting.

I understand, and typically I'm pro-Let the original creators continue their work..... Like Cameron doing Terminator films.....

But man, Lucas has lost his mind. I mean really. I do wonder what he was thinking but, what a wasted opportunity... Like I had visions of what the clone wars would be as a kid... I imagined clones be far more interesting that just being simply soldiers. I mean CLONES and they never once tried to use evil doubles or anything. Think about all the twists you could work in with that... And we get a bunch of look alike clones and that's it... one set of clones.

And THAT is one of MANY gripes. The biggest being his contradictions in his own material.

But like you said, if he hadn't botched them up so bad, we wouldn't even be having this talk, now would we?

^I warn against making posts like that, I often get asked that question and as I have not been alive for almost a decade I find it rather offensive.

Still kind of amazed at how well this edit works.

I love how the Anakin/Padme stories seem to come together in the first act and climax with them being sent away in hiding.  The feeling is so right-- a palpable curiosity about what this will lead to.

I also love the sequence on Tatooine now-- they really feel romantic and mysterious as Padme is drawn to Anakin's tortured soul, but only the viewers know how tortured the guy really is.

I think if Lucas had followed this cut of the story and followed it through, the film would have many admirers. This is much more the story he wanted to tell.

It is great... TM has MIA lately.... Kinda tempted to take his workprint, and adjust the color... At least it would be something.

Is there a copy of this edit, or some preview clip available on the web, cuz I can't find any.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I have not been around lately....I had a particularly tough past few months in school.  I've actually got a take home final due in a couple hours, but I thought of this out of the blue and wanted to come back....

I just want to let everyone know I am NOT DONE with this movie.

I was in a different phase of life when I did this edit, and because of a slow computer and lots of other things going on in my teenage life at the time, I never finished it.

But this is unfinished business .  As they said in advertising Jaws: The Revenge...this time it's personal.  When I watch the rough cut, I'm transported not only into the world of Star Wars, but I feel like I'm 15 again.  All the issues and problems going on in my life at the time, but also all of the excitement I had for this.   I guess you could say this edit was kind of an escape from the real world.  And I loved working on it and bringing other peoples' ideas into reality.  I was just never able to finish it.

I'm still fired up about this.

I can't promise you that I'll get a lot done over Christmas break (I've only got 3 weeks or so, and I'd really like to spend some time with the family) but this WILL be finished.

It's very important to me.

Thanks guys!  Take care,

-TM

I've got to say too that I'm really impressed that the rough edit has stayed in hard copy form and hasn't been posted all over the internet. Everyone kept their word.

This forum is great.

Me neither!

By the way, is it just me or does this forum seem really dead now, all of a sudden.  Where is everybody?  Where did everybody go?

Obviously I've been part of the problem too...

It's very dead... Aside from Ady's thread, and occasionally Bob Garcia's... Good to hear from you, TM.

Great News Trooperman!

This is a great edit and I get the same kind of thrill when I see how much you put together at such a young age.

Thanks for doing it and thanks for sticking in there!

...Now get to work. ;-)

Good to hear from you MTHaslett, and Ben.

Yeah, it doesn't feel the same around here.

Back in the glory days of this forum, when I first started, it was a swarm of activity, new posts popping up within seconds of each other.

I see 8 members logged in now.  Back 5 or 6 years ago, I remember seeing over 100....

Trooperman, I'm still pulling for you!

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Thanks Erik.  I'm going to be honest though- I don't see this being done before this summer.  This summer I'll sit down and put the final polish on it.  Like I said before, I have a much better work ethic than I used to, so when I devote my complete attention to this, it'll be done quickly.

If you are just a casual follower of the project, then, I would check back here around June or so.  That's when I'll be able to devote complete attention to this.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas Trooperman and the entire SOTDS thread!

This is the fanedit I've watched the most. It best emodies what's possible in fanedits to me. It also shows how much fun the PT can be.

Here's to next summer!

EDIT: "emodies?" I mean "embodies".  SOTDS embodies what a fanedit can be when enough new ideas are brought to bear.
