Why are some mentioning Yoda winking? There isn't a shot where he winks, or have i missed something?

On the shots right after Luke drops him, when he straightens up his righteye closes half-way. I guess that's what some people call "blink".

I said this on the FB copy and want to see if I'm just crazy: am I the only person who thinks the X-Wing should be starting to slip into the swamp as R2 to turning to watch it? 1. Why would he turn to look if he didn't suspect something and 2 I think it goes from perfectly still and all the way out of the water to the last part of it sinking rather quickly.

I completely agree. Ady, what do you think?

Also, in the shot directly following the part where Luke fails to raise the X-Wing, Yoda closes his eyes in disappointment. When he closes his eyes, his right eye closes much quicker than his left. Is this going to be left in, or will you fix that?

I think I've detect the reason behind the perceived 'wink'.

The mkv version of the clip wasn't playing on my laptop version of Vlc (it's an older mac and Vlc is no longer supporting that version of OSx with upgrades) so I had only the Boobtube version to judge it by.

When Yoda screws his face up in disappointment it drew my attention (and presumably the attention of others) to the right side of his face so I only saw the left side of the blink which registered as a wink. It's such a compelling illusion that I can still see it even though I know it's not there (check out the clip on youtube and see if you can confirm this).

I loaded the mkv over onto my big Mac and on a larger monitor it's clearly a blink and not a wink (sorry if this caused any anxiety) but I did see the still very noticeable wire/thread lowering the top rock down during the telekinesis training, which isn't noticeable on the smaller screen (I don't know if you intend to do something about that).

Great work.

I can't help but notice Yoda's ears.  They vibrate a lot as he moves his head.  It seems that real cartilage is stiffer than whatever the puppet is made of.  Try flicking your own ears.

Although that may be true, two things:

  1. Your ears are not as long as Yoda's. I think the amount of ear we're dealing with here matters.
  2. I distinctly remember some AOTC behind-the-scenes type thing, talking about making the CG Yoda for the first time, saying that they had tried to recreate even the little stuff like his ear wiggles, in order to get the CG-Puppet just right. It was driving Frank Oz crazy, because they were recreating things that he considered mistakes (the ear wiggles were the example of this), but Yoda just didn't look like Yoda without those. Point is, Yoda's incredibly wiggly ears are, in essence, canon.

Loved the new clip.  Everything looks so much crisper, especially the new space scenes.  Great work, no complaints here.  :)

Nope, I still dont find the reason originality a good reason to keep something since ady is replacing most of the static original whatever mattes. The original mattes were ok but not in ourdays standars :)

I don't think it's a matte thats being changed, I think it's the actual X-wing thats being worked on. If you look at the shot, you can tell the X-wing has been composited, and the shadow that follows it doesn't look right either. There should also still be water dripping from the ship as it moves towards the shore, but it all stops the moment the X-wing flys over head. Water doesn't drain out that fast.

Yeah sorry Adyman.

That's what you get when it's early in the morning, watching it on an iPhone, being distracted by a beautiful naked women laying next to you....

After watching it again on full screen, it is indeed a blink and not a wink...haha

You have my deepest sympathies, HotRod.

Great looking clip, Ady.  Thanks for not going crazy with the CG touches.

Yeah, there seems to be something un-natural about his blinks. Other than that it's awesome!

I think they're referring to his reaction at 1:52.

This has nothing to do with Adys fantastic improvements.......Yoda now has life.... how he now forms the words....eg: the lip tightens as he says "why you fail".......the only other thing I did notice was when Artoo hobbles round to look at the X-Wing right at the beginning of the clip his head rises and falls.....now every time I look at that part, even if I focus on another part of the scene I still see it out of the corner of my eye.....the other thing about Artoo in the whole movie is how his language is exactly the same as in ANH just chopped up and rearranged , it is only in ROJ does he get new compositions by BB. I know it would be sacrilege to swap in some newer arrangements from the other SW movies....but in ESB I keep flashing back to where Artoo says the same expression in ANH.

He's a robot. He's not supposed to sound different every time he tries to express his feelings. If anything - there should be the same sound when he's happy, the same sound when he's sad and so on.

Although, when you imagine all the little problems this movie had - you realize that R2's sound effects are the least important.

The way he sounds has never bothered me and till this day I could not have imagined that it could.

I'm NOT suggesting something needs done about this...its just an observation.

If you watch ROJ & the prequels you will hear the sounds of Artoo from ANH, and they are used as you say when showing his particular emotion at the time........but they are surrounded by newly composed expressions....an expanded library of sounds. ESB re-uses ANH and no expanded sounds. I remember when I saw the first clip of ROJ on TV....the part where Artoo & Threepio are at the gate of Jabba's Palace and hearing Artoo saying a new phrase......it really stood out.....6 years of hearing Artoo saying a limited amount!!

It's not a problem, just a suggestion.

I know what he means though. Like R2 makes the same sound in this scene as he does when he's being shot by Jawas in ANH. Its always stuck out to me, but I'd never change it.

Yeah, it's a little odd, but I don't mind repeated sounds it in ESB like I do in ROTJ. Those just reek of laziness. (especially Greedo. Did they think no one would notice?!)

The worst instance is in ROTS where Artoo laughs his bolts off at the announcement of Threepio having his memory wiped (effectively lobotomising him).

Thanks so much for the clip Ady; it was a very welcome surprise.  The colours are gorgeous -- I love seeing Yoda's skin looking the way I remember it as a kid.  I also thought your subtle tweaks to Yoda's mouth as he speaks were perfect.

I hate giving criticism on such terrific work, especially when I can't do anything approaching that level of quality myself, however there were two things I wanted to suggest:

1) When Yoda says, "Look at me: judge me by my size do you?", I notice you now have his eyes shift to keep his focus on Luke beginning with the word "judge."  However, I think Yoda should start to shift his gaze earlier, right from the beginning of "Look at me."  Currently, he appears to be looking off into space for a few moments.

2) As someone else suggested, is it possible to have the X-wing begin to sink/bubble/make noise the moment R2 first turns to look at it?  I don't know if it would be possible, but it would help explain why R2 turns around, and it would eliminate what currently seems like an unrealistically fast rate for the ship to sink.

As for Needa's shuttle, I think it's absolutely perfect as is.

Jaitea, i think you're probably just remembering the more common sounds from ANH because there are plenty of new expressions from R2 in ESB. For example watch the scene where the X-wing crash lands in the swamp and R2 falls in.

It isn't a big deal as I said, and to be honest I haven't listened through all of ESB to check it out so you are likely to be completely right Ady.......but there is a BIG difference in Artoo's lingo in ROJ.

I don't get the criticism that Yoda should always be looking at Luke. He isn't looking at him all the time in every other scene so what's the difference, just as actors divert their eyes to elicit a certain meaning. It's perfectly fine as it is.
