Hey Ady, that was an amazing clip, but I noticed that on the Stardestroyer that releases Needa's shuttle (great work on the new shuttle, by the way!), the two "prongs" - the two curved sticks on the underside of the SD - flicker a bit around the 5:19 mark on the YouTube video.

Also, the Yoda enhancements are absolutely fantastic, but have you ever considered doing some occassional minor movements on Yoda's brow? Maybe a slightly raised or furrowed brow would give him a bit more expression in some quick moments? I think a slightly raised brow would look great for the "That is why you fail" line. Because the mouth movements and blinks are pretty much perfect, but a bit more brow movement would totally sell the lifelike-ness of Yoda.

FANTASTIC!  But what else would we expect?

Some notes:

1. Yoda's blink at 0:42 or so looks a bit off... maybe it's just a little bit too slow?

2. After Luke fails at raising the X-Wing, is there any way to make the disappointed lowering of Yoda's ears a bit smoother?  It's always seemed a bit choppy to me puppet-wise (if that makes any sense).

3. When Yoda says "Judge me by my size, do you?", his eyes move to look at Luke half way through the line.  But shouldn't he be looking at Luke the whole line (and the ones in that angle before then, too)?  Why would he be staring off into nothingness while directly talking to Luke until the eye movement?

4. Another puppet-motion thing, but could Yoda's right hand at around 2:45 when he moves it towards his chest... could that be smoothed a bit, too?

5. Could it be more obvious that Yoda climbs up onto that ledge/rock to lift the X-Wing?

I know most of these were in the original, too, but I've just noticed them upon watching the clip.

Keep up the great work, best of luck to you, Ady!!

No, it works as is.

"Size matters not.  Look at me." - he's looking straight and raising his head up in pride as he says the line.

"Judge me by my size, do you?" - as he looks at Luke in a questioning manner.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Just noticed something.....

The pilot of that shuttle is a real daredevil.  He had to hit the gas in reverse really hard to make the shuttle seem motionless from the POV of the camera.  It's really reversing out of the SD docking bay at a breakneck rate!

And then, the pilot hits the accelerator hard and plummets to get the shuttle out of the way of the remaining SD superstructure which is still moving forward at cruising speed.  Not much room for error there!

I have two conclusions--

1)  Needa CAN'T be in an excessive hurry to his own death.

2)  The move is hugely aggressive compared to how we've seen Lambda shuttles moving in RotJ.

I know the work required would probably be enormous, but wouldn't it make more sense for the shuttle to be moving forward in relation to the POV camera at a slightly slower pace than the SD, before it makes it's descent and turn?

That said, to undermine my own point, it IS visually interesting to see the shuttle plummeting straight down before moving off.  Style versus logic, I guess.  And it is a HELL of a lot better looking than the original footage!

And you ridiculous Brits and your "Happy Christmas".....

No wonder us Yanks moved away and fought you off with sticks!  It's "Merry Christmas".  Or "Merry Christmas, eh!" if you're part of the 51st state.

Christmas just came a little early this year!

Great clip, it still amazes me how much your recolouring has done to improve this scene. (especially compared to the dreadful 2004 version).

Also a nice treat to see the shuttle replacement - I think it works great.

Also showed the clip to my father and at first he couldn't see what had been changed, we had to get the 2004 dvd and the GOUT vhs version, before he could see most of the changes. He is now as excited as I am.

CHRISTMAS CLIP TIME.....

Enjoy :)

Dude! Thank you for the clip! It's amazing!

Yoda feels even more real now. :D

Great work!

for those that want a less compressed version you can download it from here:

There's another shot in the clip that is unfinished and that one is when Luke walks away from Yoda. The shot is actually finished but it was accidentally left out from this clip because i had the layer it was on in Vegas disabled when rendering. Not a biggie really but the floor replacement to cover the moving floor isn't complete in the online version.

My word...that was awesome!

Yoda now looks like he is really alive - so much better than any other version done before CGI and Puppet wise. Subtlety is clearly the winner here. No need for reliance on complete CGI characters when you can mix a real physical thing like a puppet and bring it to life with minor digital tweaks. Film makers should take note, this is how you do it!

When you see what can be achieved and brought to life - all fresh, new and exciting, it's so inspiring! It makes me want to literally learn how to do this stuff, because you can actually feel the 'magic'. This what Star Wars is all about, and Ady has really captured this well with his work.

It would make more sense, as clearly the shuttle must've reversed hard to achieve the effect that Ady has. But, intentional or not, it actually creates a bit of tension in what is a very short shot, as it looks for a second like it isn't going to clear the other side of the ventral port. For that reason alone I think it's great. It's not really necessary, but it works really well. And technically it's flawless.

We DO say Merry Christmas as well. But we Brits do love Americans telling us how to speak our own language, so thanks. I'm sure Ady will fix that when he releases RAISING XWING: REVISITED. :-)

Interesting.. you havent changed the matte as I suggested back then with more organic one and less painted one. I still find the shuttle a bit CG rendered and its way to gray IMO even the light/gray balances are matching with the SD. All the composting seems to be perfectly correct. The lighting the blur the black levels but i dont get why is still looking so fake..so fluid..so something.

Anyways no big deal at the end. I support CG so you got it right ;).

I still want for you to try to replace the matte. I might think that the shot is wip so you have plans for you to do it. Its just too in your face the bad black balances and the limits of the paint.I strongly suggesting you to replace it :)

I remember you have to change the distant SD element as well :D

I like the new editing :)

I think you we add a shadow on the smoke when the Xwing is coming above? not sure

I just checked - It does that in the higher-quality download version too.

Good news for you then. This line is in the description for the video uploaded to Facebook:

"There is 1 shot unfinished (the xwing flying towards Luke) but everything else is as it will appear in the final edit."

I said this on the FB copy and want to see if I'm just crazy: am I the only person who thinks the X-Wing should be starting to slip into the swamp as R2 to turning to watch it? 1. Why would he turn to look if he didn't suspect something and 2 I think it goes from perfectly still and all the way out of the water to the last part of it sinking rather quickly.

Adywan,

Yesterday was my birthday and that was such a great treat to see that clip, especially since it had Yoda in it. Beautiful job with the subtle enhancements.  I know that over the years, I have watched that scene countless times, but I have never thought it was perfect...until NOW!!!

Thank you for devoting so much time and effort to this!

The other cool thing was that I took my three girls out to adopt a dog and the one we picked out happened to be named Leia. A beautiful day all the way around.

The color is fine, and it doesn't look too CG. I think what could be the problem ( if there was ) is that frame rate for that CG insert might be at PAL speed. If its not, then it might be the lighting that could be just a tad bit different. But why complain about a shot that looks really great already?

Ady Just curious, but did you use AE for the creation of that Shuttle insert or did somebody else render that shot with Lightwave or 3DSMax?

Well, I guess it's pretty obvious that he preferred the original matte, and I'm glad he stuck with it. The original matte has always looked great IMO.

Nope, I still dont find the reason originality a good reason to keep something since ady is replacing most of the static original whatever mattes. The original mattes were ok but not in ourdays standars :)

Thanks to 005 that mentioned that ady will change the shot of the matte

Wow ady, fantastic work as usual, Yoda looks great and it's a treat to see a non-green artoo detoo, the mud on the droid looks far more realistic if it isn't glowing like in the dvd

needa's shuttle at the end was a nice christmas addition since i fully expected the clip to end after "this is why you fail" thanks so much for your work

As I said before, amazing work ady. I hate to deviate from the recent clip, but I have a quick question about the Battle of Hoth. I remember seeing ady saying something about shooting/adding ground troops to the battle. Does anyone know if he means adding Snowtroopers to the shots or adding more Rebel Soldiers, or both?

Just Rebels, if I'm not mistaken.
