Wow. Padding your postcount much? ;)

EDIT: That was directed toward none, not toward Frink. Obviously, 95%+ of everything Frink posts is basically postcount padding. :P

I was just watching the ILM: Creating the impossible documentary and they showed a few scenes from TPM. Now this was presented in HD and this was definitely the new TPM transfer that will be on the Blu-Ray. The difference between the existing HD transfer (which is the same as the DVD transfer) and the new one is astounding. Now this was taken from a compressed broadcast so some detail is probably lost, like grain etc, but now the proof is out there that it will indeed be a new transfer with the colouring fixed.

Now they also showed a few clips from the OT and, to me, the colouring looked almost the same as the 2004 transfer. I'm going to go through it to get some comparison snapshots and i'll post them later. But if the colouring is indeed the same then you can almost guarantee that this is what we'll get for the Blu-Ray.

Well, guess what?  I was right.  The OT clips were from the same 2004 transfer.

Gah, I can't bear to look.  It never ceases to amaze me how GL settled for the severe tinting and crushed blacks which ended up ruining the colour and detail of his originals.  The only real difference in colour I'm expecting for the Blu-ray releases will be Luke's 'green' sabre in ANH being fixed now.  Maybe.  Which LF will no doubt hail as a great new 'creative choice' that fans should appreciate.  Either way, I'll be too busy watching 'ESB:Revisited' for it to bother me anymore.  :)

As far as the new non-pink transfer for TPM, the difference looks striking indeed, judging by your comparisons adywan, although I'm mainly just interested in what yourself and others will be able to do with it eventually.  I just hope that the 'deleted' scenes have been given the same colour-timing too though...

The Blus will probably look slightly different to these caps, but we now have a good idea of what we're looking at. (thanks for caps ady!)

No surprises. I'll bet the audio will be horrendous.

That does it. Who's ready to break into the Lucasfilm vault to steal prints?

I sure as hell am.

How could you not get down with purple space flying ships?

Wait till you see the Green Clover Slave-1!

They have us by the jugular. They can fuck up the OT as much as they can.

Yeah, the transfer looks even better too. Temple looks unscathed as well. I guess Spielberg didn't want the same criticism George gets. I was really happy with what I saw on my tv.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I sure hope the transfer does'nt look like that. You guys don't know if the picture and sound will be messed up on the blu-ray. Let's wait and  see the what final product will look like then judge it.

Bottom line, what I saw on USA was better than what I have seen on DVD.

Bottom line  is some of you guys are judging a product before it comes out in the case of the star wars blu-ray set coming out in 2011. Wait until we see actual product images of the set then you can judge it.

I think we all know the real reason Spielberg nixed any CGI changes. ;)

Those screencaps:

are UNTOUCHED.  At full resolution, the quality was poor, so they are test shots from the archives of some kind, but don't know the reasoning behind them.  Have posted in the purple TIE fighter thread at the replica forum, hopefully they'll be aware of what purpose they served.

Huh. In the Raiders HD version shown tonight on USA, it's back to the original shot.

That's odd. Hopefully it won't be added for the blu-ray release. Why did they redo this shot in the first place?

The rumor from the digital bits forum guy was that Indy 1-3 were all set to come out in late 2008 along with Crystal Skull, but Spielberg wasn't happy with the quality and wanted to start over. Maybe he was actually just annoyed with the whole Indy thing, it feels like he's gone into witness protection since Crystal Skull.

Yeah, I just saw the scene on USA (unfortunately it was only the SD broadcast b/c the hotel I'm in tonight only has really old CRT tvs, but it was letterboxed) and it was definately the original version of the shot... Fingers crossed for whenever they get around to actually putting the rest of Indy on blu!
