Who knows if Lowry is working on this blu-ray release again. I whould be realy surprised if he was. I think the saber issue's is more of ILM's fault than Lowry's but who knows.

Here's the thing:

For next year's blu-ray, since the format is 1080p Lucas doesn't really have much of a reason to pay for a re-do of the '04 masters at a higher res. Those masters are already 1080. Episodes II and III have been ready to go since the day they came out.

Now, keep this in mind:

Episode I is hitting 3D in theaters in 2012 and ILM is already at work on the conversion process, so they probably did a new DI (or, as we've been debating, went back to the files if they're still there) in order to yield 1) a new transfer for next year's blu-ray (which the film actually needed, unlike the other five) and 2) a new, higher res master from which they could start the 3D conversion process. II and III are already completely digital. When/if they get around to IV in 2015, doing a new DI probably won't seem like a such a horrible financial burden for Lucas /sarcasm.

They really are gonna need to do a fresh scan for the 3D version of the OT. In the case of movies like II and III and Avatar, the cameras for the live-action photography were only 1080p, yes, but they went through 2k DI's as far as I know, effectively scaling the live action footage slightly. Avatar was projected at 1920 by 1080 for its 16:9 digital 3D version, but there was also a scope (2.35:1) digital 3D version made for the auditoriums set up for scope. This scope version probably had a horizontal resolution of 2048 (2K). The OT movies are, obviously, scope-only. Maybe Lucas thinks 1920 by 817 will still be considered good enough for a 3D projection in 2015, but he won't be getting around to OT until then, so who knows.

Sorry, but I have a hard time telling the difference between the two shots. I would have never noticed it unless someone told me it was changed.

But on the BDs, from what I have picked up is that the transfer may be 1080p, but the scan is lower than 2k or 4k, whatever that means. Apparently LFL likes recycling masters to minimize costs on production.

What if by some chance LFL does'nt recycle the HD masters from 2004 and make new ones for the blu-ray release? Then what?

See the reason I ask is because other film studios don't recycle the same hd master for their films release on blu-ray ( with robocop being the one execption their are others but that's the only one I've heard about) I can't see LFL doing that with the star wars films on BD but we shall see.

I am excited for the blu-ray release for some fans they are'nt because the oot won't be in the set to me it's not a huge issue it whould be nice if it was included. Do I agree that all the versions of the verisons of the oot should be on the blu-rays absolutely they should be.

1) Only my friends call me Fink.

2) I rip your posts because you keep repeating the same stuff over and over again.

There was a better version (split screen I think) going around but the link above is enough to highlight the difference.

Thanks. Yeah, I looked that video up when it was mentioned before. I don't see why they bothered to change that shot; it was always one of my favorite movie vfx sequences.

Unfortunately it's an ongoing initiative at LFL to tinker/meddle/ruin good scenes from their library of films. And Steven Spielberg, I'm looking at you too.

It would be amazing if they did do new masters for the blu-ray, but it just seems so unlikely at this point. But you're right, there is a possibility.

The chances of Lucasfilm creating a new HD master of the OT is approximately 3720 to 1

Well, the problem is that LFL is not a rational company anymore. They don't realize that recycling a master (because the boss thinks its perfect) would ultimately mean a poor quality Blu-ray. Plus, they have done it before for the GOUT, by using the 93 masters, and that was done with zero effort. They weren't focused on making a good product of the GOUT, they were trying to undercut bootleg sales.

On a side note, in the end the OT, plus THX and Graffitti, are lost forever. The only thing we can honestly do is accept the loss, however unjust it is, and move on with our lives. The SW franchise was noting more than an elaborate bear trap created by Lucas and we should have never have become fans of the films in the first place. They caused more pain than happiness.

I am still a huge fan of star wars and I allways will be. No matter if the oot is released in it's original form or not. I like both versions of the ot , the oot and the upgraded SE's of the Ot.

You have the right to your opinion, but Lucas wants to make the choice for us on what version we can watch. And he has checkmated us with the release of the GOUT. There may be an astronomical demand for the OOT, but LFL is deaf to the public. I assure you all, the release of the GOUT is the absolute last time we will see the originals released in any legal form. By 2035, these discs will rot and the loss of the films will be complete. It is set in stone and no matter what we think we could do to stop it, we cannot reverse LFL's decision.
