3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED! — Page 13

UPDATE: Per Big Shiny Robot, Lucasfilm has sent the following response to the new rumor:

"This is completely false. Right now, we are totally focused on bringing Star Wars to 3D, and we have no plans to do an Indiana Jones conversion."

Cheer up Indy fans. There's always the possibility of this happening after the Star Warsconversions have come out...in 2018 or so.

This last sentence really makes me sad.

The report, published late Friday by IESB and citing an “ultra top-secret Lucasfilm insider,” claims the new trilogy would land after the planned 3-D conversion of the six Star Wars films.

“This is, of course, completely false,” Lucasfilm spokesman Josh Kushins told Wired.com in an e-mail Saturday about the report. “George Lucas has plenty of projects to keep him busy right now — including plenty of Star Wars projects — but there are no new Star Wars feature films planned.”

Here's an interesting article that I don't think has been linked to yet.

Some interesting excerpts:

BD: Tell me about your role.

JK: It's mostly being the arbiter of good taste. There's a lot of different ways to play stereo. How deep do you go with it? Where do you play convergence? Do you rack convergence? Do you do floating windows? How stylistic do you go on wide shots? Do you leave them realistic? Or do we need to see stereo even on a wide shot with nothing close to camera where you wouldn't really see much. A lot of those kinds of questions need to be answered and I'm trying to provide the answers that result in good-looking stereo that looks to the largest extent possible that it looks like it was shot in stereo; and not with the weird miniaturization or the cardy look or the warped spaces or the edge artifacts that we've seen in other stereo conversions.

BD: So, what's your plan?

JK: What we're doing that one-third forward, two-thirds back use of depth. We'll be using floating windows to maximize good, usable, depth dynamic range. And then, stylistically, I go fairly realistic with the stereo. I don't like hyper stereo and there are a lot of shots in the Star Wars pictures that are meant to be big vista spectacle. It's a big wide view of a city or a space battle, and there's nothing particularly close to camera. Shooting in stereo, you wouldn't get a lot of depth. So I'm not going to go hyper stereo on that because it has a really ugly artifact, in my view, of that miniaturization. You don't want to see that these ships are really closer than the star field and undermine all the effort that we tried to put in to make those scenes have vast scale. So I'm going to play all the wide shots more realistically and rely on the overall context of the sequence where you're right there with the characters, experiencing this with them. And there are loads and loads of action where we're in tighter and closer, and that's where the stereo shines.

BD: Any plans to do tweaking?

JK: No, there are no plans to revisit shots or do any new work. This is just doing a stereo conversion of what we've got. This is a long process if done right and I have no intention of doing something that damages the brand. I think we're going to set a new precedent for what conversion can look like?

No intention of damaging the brand?  A bit too late for that.

Lucas has destroyed star wars.  Simple as that.  We will never see the true theatrical trilogy ever again Lucas has them banned and buried, except for the crap gout.

I found something interesting in a post over at the avsforum. This person's dad apparently sat next to John Lowry on a plane flight. Here's the relevant text:

"He also mentioned that they're working with the Star Wars movies again, and have gone back to the originals for the groundwork. This is probably for the 3d versions (I would assume the masters for use with the Blu-Ray set are finished already). He implied that this restoration means they will have restored versions of the theatrical Star Wars movies, but that they have had no indication from Lucas that the movies are in the pipeline for release in their theatrical versions."

Friend of a friend who happened to know who John Lowry was got quotes that they're restoring the originals? I doubt it, but I won't let it not give me a shred of hope.

That's nothing. My uncle's nephew's cousin was trapped in a broken elevator with Rick McCallum for 14 hours. Rick told him that Jar Jar was actually a US government experiment that CIA spooks made Lucas put in TPM, and that a totally restored OOT will be released, but "accidentally" packaged as collector sets of "Superbabies: Baby Geniuses II" so no one will ever see it.

It was all posted on the internet in code. Without the cypher it looked like a Twilight/Duck Tales fan-fic, so that no one would suspect the truth.

They probably had to go back to the originals for shots that needed more work done to them. Thus they probably made a perfect transfer of the OOT to begin new work on and this will never see the light of day.

The day that Raiders comes in 3D will be beyond sad. "Look, Indy's about to be crushed by GL's giant ego!"

I respect Walter's work, but unless he's seen a current movie actually shot in 3D and not a conversion, he's full of crap. Captain Eo was shot with the old headache inducing 3D. In fact, every 80's 3D flick I ever saw gave me problems. Half the blame can be put on bad projection though.

And Ebert was spinning pseudo technobabble about why digital projection is inferior to film from day one, so it's no surprise he's not a fan of 3D.

As a migraine sufferer, I'm amazed I haven't had a problem with a single film I've seen with the new tech.

So...

I found a forum dedicated to taking the different 3D movies that are out and converting the formats so that people who can't digest one format can use another.  You know, a forum dedicated to isos of 3D blu rays.  (Word to wookie groomer, whom I saw over there).

But that's not the important part.  They also have a forum for 2D-3D conversions.  And, lo and behold, you can already download the OT (2004 SE's) in 720p 3D glory!

So... wait no more for 2015-2017... you can go watch 'em right now!

(Also, our very own Adywan and his 2 minute Jabba conversion get an honourable mention).

This is probably the place Neptune came from:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-3D-Conversion/topic/12312/

The 2d-3d conversions sorta work.  But are not a good representation of the technology, according to the members there.

*EDIT*

Ok I see they've branched out into another forum.  The first clue of what they are doing is the following:

In the first phase of our conversion process unfortunately, there's not much that can be done yet for adjustment of depth. The second phase (frame advance on one side) can add some depth but it is motion dependent. We usually run the frame advance either for right to left or left to right. It could be done scene by scene but that would take alot longer. As it is now, it's an imperfect process. One could try swapping fields while viewing and play with dropping the horizontal parallax back a bit based on the scene. (these adjustments are available in Stereoscopic Player and Stereo Movie Maker).

Gah, how did I miss that the first time around?  That's what I get for not hanging around enough of the other forums, I guess.

Well, so I'm late to the news desk.  I'm planning a Fall 2011 3D upgrade to my home theatre so I won't be able to enjoy them in full quality until then (if things go according to plan).  I'm 90% sure you can download them now (as I am doing) and use stereoscopic player to convert them in real time to red/blue anaglyph.

I think there's at least 4 bands in the qualityscale for 3D:

  1. On the fly converted by your tv
  2. Converted by an amateur at home with better quality than "on the fly"
  3. Converted by a professional studio
  4. Shot in 3D (4reelz)

So,  I'm not assuming these will be a 3 or a 4 on that scale.  But I'm guessing it's better than a 1, and given that the "real" #3 will be done by Lucasfilm in 2015, I'm not sure that these still won't be better.

Now just to convince Neptune to do it all over again for SW:Revisited and Adywan's pending SW Theatrical reconstruction.
