Do the receiver and Bluray player have multi-channel analogue connection?  You could potentially take advantage of lossless audio that way, though depending on the player's DAC quality it might not be all that much better than a lossy encode.  Plus if there is processing being done it might end up converting back to digital again anyway, and some receivers have a problem with LFE levels coming out 10 db too low with this kind of connection, so it's not a sure thing.  Bluray discs usually have AC3 640 kbps or DTS 1509 kbps as an alternative to the lossless sound, so at least you're getting the best lossy version possible; and of course if your speakers aren't very revealing the difference can be hard to perceive anyway . . .

I've never heard a 6.1 or 7.1 setup, so I don't have firsthand knowledge of what that sounds like.  Now that you mention it I do remember seeing that some of the HP films were mixed that way.  The dvd's have 5.1 Dolby-EX, so the additional rear channel is matrixed out of phase between the two side surrounds rather than being discrete.  I get pretty good results with standard 5.1--my back speakers are off to the side and a few feet over my head at the listening position, which is pretty much where they're supposed to go.  I think I'd get a better effect with dipole surrounds, since standard speakers are easy to localise in a small room which is contrary to the intended effect of surround sound, but it's not a major problem.

A lot of people have really crappy subwoofers, if they have them at all, but they don't notice since they only care about loudness.  I really don't like listening to sloppy, distorted bass, which is why I made sure to get a subwoofer with high fidelity and precise controlled output (though of course it can play loudly when called for).  In addition to being excellent for music, it is also easy to tell which films put effort in creating good LFE and which just use generic one-note boom for everything.

Probably going to see Prisoner of Azkaban tonight . . . my girlfriend really doesn't like that one very much, because of the issues with Hermione's portrayal that I mentioned earlier, but since it's been a long time since either of us watched it we're hoping those moments will pass by peacefully.  lol

That's what I'm watching right this moment. Gotta love Alec Baldwin.

Before, I watched Raising Arizona. One of my all time favorites.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

The Blu-Ray player is a PS3, so no, it does not have analog surround outputs.  The receiver has 7.1 analog inputs, though.  Like it makes a difference.  So we're stuck with optical 5.1 audio.

The receiver does have a ProLogic IIx decoder, which will upmix 5.1 audio to 7.1, so the speakers do get used.  It also has DTS Neo-6 for DTS tracks, but that will only upmix to 6.1, meaning the rear center channel is split between the surround back left and surround back right speakers in a 7.1 setup.  Which is exactly what the Philosopher's Stone 6.1 track did when playing as DTS-ES.

Only if you were wearing the hat.

Grown Ups.

It was well made but there could have been more laughs - it was more of a feel good movie.

2012 in D-Box.

I might have posted about this movie when we watched it a couple of months ago... but here's a recap.   I thought it was nonsense.  And not fun enough to make the nonsense worth it.

But I've heard that it's a great movie to demo my d-box chair, so when I saw it at the library I decided to give it a second spin.

The thing I've noticed about the chair is that it often makes this stupid grin set in on my face.  That's how I know it's working.  The long of the short of it is, I rewatched the limo drives away from destruction scene, the plane flies away from destruction scene (1 of 7) and the trailer drives away from destruction until it catches up to the plane which flies away from it too. (2 of 7) and the big plane flies A.F.D. (3 of 7).  And all three of those scenes were pretty spectacular.  I had my wife come watch the same scenes and I sat in one of those old fashioned "stationary" chairs.  I could tell that it went back to the same crapfest it has always been.

So... give it a shot if you can.

Is it legal yet in Colorado to marry a chair?  Because I think you're halfway there.

I read that Back to the Future is compatible with D-box, including The Ride.

That made me want one. I want to know what these chairs look like. Xhonzi, picture us up!

It's just a hometheatre recliner (black, if you must know) with the legs replaced with the servos.  It doesn't look like much.

EDIT: This isn't mine, and it doesn't look exactly the same... but it's pretty darn close.

I know the BTTF movies are compatible, but I didn't think the ride was.  Where did you hear that?

Oh and it would be a lot cheaper just for you and the 005's's's''s'ss''''ss''s' wife to come visit us in Denver and we can watch a marathon.  Now I just need more chairs.  :(  Too bad I'm broke from buying the first one.

Oh, and I would marry the chair if I could and it didn't involve bigamy.  I'm not ready to divorce my wife just to marry the chair.  Not until it supports xbox, anyways.

The night before last I revisited Dr Jekyll And Sister Hyde.

It never fails to entertain, it's hilariously kinky but also beautifully made.

I have to laugh at how two particular body-snatchers manage to find themselves in the wrong city, and with the wrong accents.

In an alternate universe somewhere this was a reasonably faithful adaptation of the book set in Edinburgh and Stevenson is considered an even greater literary genius.

Back to the Future: The Ride (SD, 31 min)—For me, this is probably one of the coolest featurettes I've had the pleasure in viewing. Fans can relive the thrill ride from the Universal Studios theme park, with the video everyone was forced to watch while waiting in line and then the ride itself. Also, this is the first time I've ever wanted D-Box Motion equipment because there is a special motion code just for this featurette.

Thanks for the offer. Honestly, Denver is one of those places that my wife and I have a desire to go for no particular reason (see also: Seattle), so if we do go, I'll let you know. *shrug*

Wait, xhonzi only has one chair?

...

...

Well, this could be uncomfortable.

Anyway, last movie seen was The Human Centipede.  A delightful light-hearted rom-com about two American women and a Japanese man who find themselves in an unexpected and fulfilling relationship thanks to the guidance and wisdom of a kind-hearted German surgeon.

At least, that's all I remember.  I kind of blacked out at some point.

Human Centipede, Floss Teeth?  Are you feeling quite alright, Frink?

And I have lots of chairs and places to sit.  But just seating for 7 in the home theatre.  And room for maybe 1.5 or 1.7 in the d-box chair.  Which is often me and my 4 kids.  Or me and my wife.

Interesting.  I wonder if there are any confirmed sightings...  The only people I know who would know seem to think it's not coded yet.

Well, Frink is stobbing by in March-ish.  So don't come then.  Or do.  But besides my chair, why would you want to come to Denver?

I think it's my reaction to seeing The Wiggles You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and Elmo's Potty Time during the day.

Frink approached me about this, I might be able to convince my wife to meet someone she's played online with, it would hardly be our first time doing that.
