Idea: X-Wing Proton Torpedo Challenge

When I was 10 and building an X-wing fighter model, I saw that there were proton torpedo launchers in the underneath fuselage.

I always felt these weren’t shown launching the important fatal blows to the Death Star in the original version of “A New Hope” due to budgetary or time constraints.  And I hoped they would be shown in the SE or in the “Revisited” fan edit/reconstruction, but they weren’t.

New shot(s) of them launching would give a great reference point for the difficulty of the shot on the target as well as show where the heck they’re coming from.  So that’s my challenge to everyone out there creating new edits of the movie.

Oh, and replace those dopey shots of TV switcher controls for the Death Star firing sequences. Takes you right out of the movie.

I don't think seeing them launch is particularly necessary.  I would like to see the torpedoes themselves get a bit of a makeover - they don't look much like torpedoes to me (though I suppose I've never seen a proton torpedo).

Maybe you could get away with showing them launch when Red Leader(?) launches them in his failed attempt to bring down the Death Star.

Also, I wouldn't change the firing room shots for the world - they feel too much like Star Wars to me.

Excellent!

You can post your radical ideas for ANH here.

More radical more welcome :)

I remember that Marvel showed a physical torpedo in one of it's comics.

I think it's when the bounty hunter Valance is remembering his origin story as a stormtrooper left for dead after a Rebel attack (can any Marvel collectors help me out here?).

If memory serves it looked a bit like an elongated vacuum valve (presumably the proton glow activated when the target was near).

I thought it looked rather cool at the time and was pleased it was a physical object and not another energy weapon (proton torpedo as in neutron bomb).

IIRC, the torpedoes can be seen on the shot when they go into the exhaust port. I think they look like conical pyramids.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

They can be seen, yes, but they don't particularly look like real-world torpedoes at all (though nothing says they should), and you never see them actually being fired from the X-Wing.

The cone could just be the warhead there may be a longer casing which never makes it to it's target (like a bullet).

Hold on a second.

Exhaust port is only 2 meters wide. The entire width of the nose of the x-wing can't be much more than 2 meters, but it could fire two torpedoes that barely fit through the opening.

Could Lucas have meant "2 feet", but wanted to sound more universal? That would be impressive to bullseye, while shooting wamp rats which are BIGGER than 2 meters doesn't seem so impressive (but it does sound terrifying).

EDIT: Upon review, the torpedoes don't just squeeze through like I thought they did. If the port is indeed 6 feet wide, it looks like the torpedoes are 1.5 feet or so wide. No, nevermind. Still, 6+ foot wamp rats are terrifying.

EDIT: I can't live without pictures:

It never occured to me in all these years that you don't see the torpedos launch. I for one have never felt their lack.

Maybe the cones are folded up like an umbrella (torpedo stage) and expand after launch to look a bit like a shuttlecock.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that... Drives me insane every time I see them. Of course I spent 10 year in broadcasting.

I didn't know they were Grass Valley video switchers until I was a tv production intern ten years later. Was fun recognizing them from the film. Every time I used the fader bar, I imagined I was vaporizing Alderaan.

I suppose somewhere there is a fan who knows his guns who cringes at all the British firearms dressed up as blasters. Or a camera collector who groans when Luke, Ben, or Darth whip out a Graflex flash gun. ;)

Where were you in '77?
