A quick stab composing the shot more like the original mockup :Right Aligned Hoth Base

Looks good but lose the pink tones.  Keep it in the blues and grays.  We're in the snow AND underground, remember?

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Those are the tones of the original matte and the original photograph of a real ice-cave but I will give it another go later.

Would it be better to nudge the guys nearer to the centre?

I was a bit divided  because while the conversation is the main focus of the shot the ships are the main focus of the conversation.

Leave the guys on the far right, it looks far better than the original that way.
It's quite impressive, really.
If the conversation is the main focus of the shot, and the ships are the main focus of the conversation, doesn't that mean they sort of balance each other out? I'd keep it the way it looks now, but without the pink tones.
It looks AWESOME! ;)

if they were just standing there it would be possible to shrink and place them on the right but they walk off the screen so i have to keep them the same size. Plus it would be a nightmare having to replace all the insignias and track them to look perfect. I'm just going to go with a new larger background to show just how big this hangar is with a lot more activity

What would be better imho would be to crop the image as on the rough from the storyboard, or like the original image Ady posted. I mean, ok it's nice to see more of the ship on the painting but it's a background detail that attracks too much attention and it leeches off the shot. A perfect background is an unoticed one.

YAAAAAY!!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Why does Joe Johnston look like he is about to be attacked by The Blob or the ooze from Ghostbusters 2? :p

Cool....I like that mockup of the ice wall reminiscent of the original drawing.

I think we've all managed some nice ideas and possibilities regarding this particular scene.

In any case I can't wait to see AdY's take on this quick scene.

God , i'm loving reading through the making of empire book. Something interesting i found which will put the debate about the passage of time in the bespin scenes finally to rest:

"Typical of George was his clever concept of showing the passage of time in Cloud City," says Ellenshaw, "by going from sunrise to daylight to sunset for the falcons departure."

So there we have it . Why the hell they recoloured everything in 2004 to make it look more like sunset when the falcon arrives just shows to me that the recolouring was never a deliberate creative decision because that screws up the original intent of the scene.

Hey you... stop spamming Adywan's thread with all this off topic stuff.  What does this have to do with his edit?

I sort of went in grammar overdrive, while I just could have said:
Hey that looks neat, keep it that way, but as usual:

larger background => showcase more activity => ady knows best ;)

Recently I've made a trailer in Russian. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7EbveFnTJ8

I understand russian, and I've seen a lot of movies in russian, but this was the 1st time I had ever seen something Star Wars related... in russian. Which is kind of weird...

Original is better, of course, but interesting stuff anyways. X)

Hey ady, so I replaced my video card and now it lags no matter what in the preview window... All my computer specs are now at high enough standards where I can play brand new video games in freaking 3D smoothly, but Vegas still lags... I'll try de-fragging and searching for updates to my driver. In the meantime, any advice?

:: So what does this have to do with the topic of this thread? Answer: Nothing. You're on a warning too sunshine. In future please use the correct forum.

Adywan,

Will you be doing anything with the AT-AT stop-motion to make it look not-so "stop motion"?

"Darth Vader... tall and threatening in his black helmet, flowing black cape, and a face, forever masked, by a foreboding metal breath screen...

Darth Vader... a figure, who moves forever in a cloud of awesome evil!"

no. The stop motion of the AT-AT's has always worked perfectly for me. It gives them a more mechanical feel. The versions we see in the PT just look so fake and too fluid

Will you be adding any sort of subtle "bass" sound FX to the footfalls (especially in the mid shots and close shots)?  Also, I think what Bravo may be referring to is the "jerkiness" of most stop-motion effects.  I can understand keeping the stated "foot hits down, stays for a moment, then picks up again" as opposed to something too fluid for a machine (especially one that weighs a few 100 tons), but will you slightly tweak them in the case of the stop-motion being a bit jerky in the mid movements of the models?

Even in the case of something lumbering, taking specific steps (such as the foot hitting the ground and then waiting a beat before the foot picks up again, to emphasize the weight of the object), there is going to be some motion blur.  It has been a while since I've seen the AT-AT attack scene, so I can't say if it is real noticeable.

I guess it is akin to the Space Slug scene; nothing major but even a slight bit of tweaking may improve the effectiveness of a scene.

Aside from the color and levels correction (which looks already done) ; the transparency problems (looks already fixed); the enhanced laserbolts (looking awesomely great); additional tweaks and surprises we have yet to see; and Adywans statement that he is going to recapture the theatrical richness and bass of the sound of the battle - the AT-AT movements are perfect the way they have always looked in my opinion.

I find your lack of faith…disturbing
