I would assume 1977. Also, the ANH crawl was 1981, not 79.

Nobody has responded to my question about a TR of ANH-77 (or ANH-79). Does one exist?
Not yet. Adywan has said he'll be making a TR after he finishes ESB-R.
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Great!
Has he said whether it will be 77, 79, or both?
I think it would be straightforward to provide both through seamless branching. The only difference is the opening crawl, right?
Time is running out for the Rebels. Antilles upcourt to Skywalker. He’s being paced by Darth Va— the bone-jarring pick by Solo! He came out of nowhere! Skywalker’s open from way outside, he launches at the buzzer... Good! It’s good! The Rebels win on a sensational buzzer beater by Luke Skywalker! Let’s take another look at that last shot. He just does get it off in time. Wow, what a shot. That’s why they call him Luke Legend.
That may be the most exciting battle I have ever been privileged to broadcast. Certainly the most dramatic finish. We’ll get you an update on the Artoo Detoo injury situation in just a moment. Right now let’s go courtside where SuperShadow is waiting with Chewbacca.

I hope that doesn’t mean my SW fan credentials are revoked.

I'll forgive Luca$ when he puts the OOT on blu-ray, complete with all the bells and whistles, the same treatment he gave the SE's for DVD, thus showing respect, gratitude and courtesy for us OOT fans that have invested 100's of dollars, time, love, fuel, for his merchandise and contributing to his immense wealth.

Wrong sci-fi franchise...I think.

Uh?! You pay for what you get. Or do you buy merchandising so that he can make what you want?

Uh?! bottom line, Luca$ could show consideration for devoted OOT fans is all I meant.
And Frink, its car FUEL. LOL!

Moreover, Lucas recently committed to Warren Buffet's Giving Pledge—he's going to donate at least half of his money, billions of dollars, to charity when he dies. Not just any charity, either, but his own: Edutopia: the George Lucas Educational Foundation.
Star Wars is going to pay for the education of many future children.

He hasn't apologized to the OOT fans, so he cannot be forgiven.
I will not even bother to forgive him as long he treats the OOT as a discontinued product.
Here's the email I sent to the writer of that article:
Nice article, Joel. BUT, it would have been a GREAT article if you mentioned George’s insane campaign to quash the original 1977, 1980, and 1983 award-winning versions of the Original Trilogy out of existence.
Here’s a quote for you:
"In the future it will become easier for old negatives to become lost and be 'replaced' by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten."
-George Lucas to a Congressional Hearing on the colorizing and altering of classic films, 1988, just a few years before he altered the Star Wars films and buried the originals.
And a couple sites to consider:
http://originaltrilogy.com/index.cfm
http://savestarwars.com/
This is a dire situation, not just for “fanboys”, but for our cultural heritage, and the history of American cinema. Until the original versions are released in the best format possible (they are NOT included in next year’s Blu-ray release), I’m afraid that forgiving Mr. Lucas is absolutely OUT of the question.
-“JediTray”
When this comes up in outside circles, I think it might be worth mentioning that he is not the sole director, writer or financier of those 3 movies. I don't think the general public is aware of that anymore.

Yes, obviously. I've just never heard someone complain about all the car FUEL they've spent on Star Wars.
I'm mostly upset over how much liquard swartz I've wasted on it.

Well, thank goodness you didn't waste any liquid schwartz, that would have been a real tragedy.
You can't forgive someone who isn't sorry.
You certainly can't forgive someone while they are committing the offensive act.

Mmm...I would say you can on both counts. It's certainly not easy but it can be done.
Here's what I don't get......
I just got done watching Empire of Dreams again and it's obvious that the original "Star Wars" was created during a tumultuous time in history not only here in America but in the world as we knew it then. There were also SO many challenges when it came to creating the techniques from scratch which were used to help garner the 10 Oscar (edited) nominations and the 7 wins....all of them for the production side of the process. Countless people in film-making were influenced by these changes and the end results....what a WASTE for it to be shunned by the guy who fought so hard to get it made with the obviously restricted budget he was allowed.
WHY undo all of that by exacting what seem by most to be frivolous changes that weren't executed very well with far superior technology than was used to create the original masterpiece?
I don't think it's just because he could.....there had to be something more personal that wasn't very intelligently connected to keep things in focus.
I love Star Wars......I'm just sad that what made it so accessible and relevant is being wiped from existence just to facilitate and justify "creative license".
It was just a ham-fisted attempt to get kids and schlubs to like the movies better and buy the toys. And it worked.

Were you not around when the OOT was released? Believe me, they were no less effective at appealing to kids and selling toys than the later versions aimed more directly (and more insultingly) at them. That’s not the reason he’s burying the OOT.

Oscars, not Emmys. ;)
