THEATRICAL!
Sorry, I hate the Redux version with a fiery passion, but the theatrical cut is one of my favorite films of all time.
I watched Hidalgo today.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

OK, so I rented Apocalypse Now. Should I do Redux or the Theatrical Cut for a first-time viewing? This was inspired by the fact that I read Heart of Darkness for AP Lit.

The Redux version destroys the pacing, watch the original.
Then watch it again.
I haven't seen Apocalypse Now, but I have read Heart of Darkness, and the subject's been on my mind a bit lately, because in my spare time I've been writing a story that has a bit of a Heart of Darkness-y vibe to it (the Kurtz scene in particular). I have viewed the scene with Marlon Brando, and I always loved the reference to it on Buffy, with Xander's dream at the end of season four. ;)
The last movie I watched was Serenity, the collector's edition dvd with the DTS track. Love the film, even though a few things about it don't quite jive with Firefly when you think about them.

Agreed - I saw Redux having not seen the film before and I found it to really drag. Watch the original then maybe flick through and watch the extra redux bits later if curious.
Watching The Godfather for the first time tonight. I'm a little tired, so hopefully I make it all the way through - I'm sure someone would literally kill me if I fell asleep during it.

...wow. That's really all I can say. This got me really pumped for Apocalypse Now.

Now you need to watch Godfather Part II. In my mind it's better than the first in many ways, yet only because of how it builds on the first. It really feels like the second half of the story.
The third one's not a bad movie, but it's wholly unnecessary, and kind of cheapens the ending of II.
That's what I've heard. Godfather III, from what I understand, is a "it's just kind of there" or a "what were they thinking?!?" movie.
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
But don't confuse statements like that with it being a bad film, because it's not. It's actually pretty damned good. It's just unnecessary. It would have been better as a non-Godfather film.

Saw "The Money Pit" (1986) with Tom Hanks, last night. Pretty nice flick.
The Money Pit is essentially a remake of the 1947 film Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. Both are pretty funny, in a horribly realistic sort of way.
I'll watch just about anything with Cary Grant, because he is the epitome of awesome. Bringing Up Baby is definitely my favourite film of his, because the way he frantically tries and fails to talk sense into the irrepressible Katharine Hepburn is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Agree 100% Top 10 for sure.

That's how a great many movies should be viewed. Total focus on the experience of the film. There are a few that I absolutely will not watch unless similar conditions can be met. A select few are also day\night\weather\season dependent.
The last time I saw The Exorcist I was in Chateau Bingowings on my own, it's very, very quiet here so all those strange sounds really came through.
I then noticed a light somewhere but at first I couldn't track it down but I traced it to my PSone screen which had mysteriously had turned itself on without the console being turned on.
I couldn't turn the thing off so I unplugged the unit and all the downstairs fuses went (all but the one working the telly screen and the DVD player).
This kind of freaked me a bit so I had to switch the thing off and try and change the fuse using a torch (flashlight if you are over the pond).
The central heating went off too and the place was getting colder and colder all the time.
When I managed to get the electricity back on two light bulbs blew with a loud pop.
I have yet to resume watching the film.
I wasn't as weirded out since the phone rang when the Mystery Man got Bill Pullman to phone his house during my first viewing of Lost Highway and (as you can by now guess) my phone rang right on cue and nobody rings here, especially after Ten bells.
Thank god it wasn't Bill Pullman on the line.

I feel the opposite. I don't think it cheapens the ending of II. In fact, I think it reinforces the ending of II.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.
The Redux is a travesty. The additional scenes are nice to see as a curio. The original is mystic, cryptic, unconventional, primeval, uncompromising, mysterious, unforgettable and the Redux is none of these.
I never really liked Godfather Part II as much as others. It is a good film, but just isn't anywhere near the magic of the first. Plus the whole in and out of time idea was done immeasurably better in Once Upon a Time in America. (which in my opinon blows GFII out of the water.)
When I finally rewatched Part III, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I remembered. It is a good film, but certainly flawed. As a seperate film it would be beter. Same with The Two Jakes.
The Thin Blue Line.

That's funny - I DVR'd The Two Jakes from Showtime last night. Never seen it, I'm planning on watching it sometime this week.
It's different. Ultimately worth it, but very weird. Imagine a meandering LA Confidential without the sparkle and Jack post-Joker. 50's period look made to reminisce the look of Chinatown. And Harvey Keitel makes anything instantly better.

I thought The Two Jakes was a good film, though it was missing some of the things that made Chinatown so great. In the end, I wouldn't call it a sequel, but it's not bad at all.

I never thought the first Godfather film was that amazing but I really do feel the quality of the second one.
I certainly don't see the big problem with the third (other than I can never take George Hamilton seriously).
Just saw Back to the Future in the theatrical re-release (which was done as part of the promotion for the upcoming Bluray). It was awesome! Not only did the movie itself look amazingly good, but it was really great seeing it on the big screen, with an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. Definitely the highlight of my recent movie-watching experiences.
