You know the true benefit in watching "The Exorcist", is that it makes "The Exorcist III: LEGION" a bit more dramatic and gives you some background on some of the characters and their motivations.  "The Exorcist III: LEGION" is one of my all time favorites, while "The Exorcist" is not. But "The Exorcist" is still a great classic film. Just be sure to stay far far away form "Exorcist II". Now that is a horrific film, but not in the way fans want it to be.
