I would like to read this book!

Buy a used copy from any of the multitude of online book resellers!

I did and the books a good read! (think I paid a buck for the book!)

!!!!

So what's your book scanning process, Silverwook?

I'm looking for it, but a free digital copy is not a bad thing.

I love the matresses!  I think this is going to be my new desktop background at work for a little bit.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

I got my copy today from Amazon. Haven't had a chance to look thru it yet, but it looks great. :-)

Interesting. Do you have a direct link to it because I can't find it, and that whole site is annoyingly designed entirely in Flash and is horrible to navigate.

Cheers.

You have it inside Empire's lost documentary section.

Thanks. It took a bit of looking though. There's some very good stuff on that site (I liked the archive video interviews in particular), it's just the Flash is slow and clumsy to navigate.

avoidz, I couldn't agree more re. the flash, and it's a subject that's been brought up many times, but the author behind it is adamant about it. It still doesn't always work properly for me, and several times I could have wrangled what I needed from it if only I could view source. Yay flash.

I got it; thank you very much.

Yeah, that site is a real bitch to navigate. Many good things there though.

The new Rinzler book is absolutely amazing, I've just read through half of it yet, but it's definitely worth the prize. Those who already own the old book will definitely need to pick this up as it also cover much pre and post-production, some comments here and there are taken from DVD commentaries and other interview sources to fill it out some, but otherwise it's Alan Arnold's tapes here, uncensored. Haven't noticed any usual revision-bullshit yet.

Hmm, yes, I was wondering if there would be any mention of the 1997 and 2004 meddling; perhaps towards the end of the book.

It certainly is interesting how Lucas' ideas about Darth and Luke's father evolved. I have only read about a tenth so far and am finding out new things all the time. I did notice a quote that was a complete lift form 'Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga". Lucas does have a tendency to repeat himself though.

Also it never ceases to amaze me that the majority of the ideas that were thrown out or not achievable at the time were used in the prequels. It just goes to show that discerning individuals and restrictions are required when making a film. Don't read this as Lucas bashing. More that Lucas had a much better team around him at the time of Star Wars and Empire.

I think, with regards to Lucas repeating things, that it's simply because that's who he is. He hasn't changed a lot over the years.

And he's always reused ideas, Temple of Doom? 50% of that was from the cutting room floor of the first's script.

He is nothing, if not persistent.

^^ I agree. The creative team certainly seemed better, fresher back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He relied on them a lot more to make his imagination a movie reality. Now it's done on computers with sycophants who are too afraid to say Jar Jar was a shit idea.

If I read that the Imperial capitol city that eventually evolved into Coruscant wasn't possible to realize on film back then, I'll just have a good laugh. ;)

Where were you in '77?

Jar Jar wasn't a shit idea, GL gave up or didn't feel the need to carry through with the character.  He took a character which in TPM was a societal outcast, in AotC he uplifted him until he was working in the Senate.  If Anakin killed Jar Jar half way through RotS because Jar Jar while working in the Senate figured out that Palps=Sidy, there's the pay off.  People get what they thought they wanted the death of Jar Jar but coming at the cost of Anakin turning his back to the Republic and JC, and it would have given more credance to Qui-Gon for picking him up.  GL gave up on the character.  The potential was there.  but then you loose a popular kids toy.

Well when GL said in early development "Jar Jar is the key to the whole thing", that was a bad idea right there; he hadn't given up yet.

Maybe the "key" was being the most marketable toy and mucho dollars for LFL.

Question for people that have this, is there bonus content in the hardcover version like there was for The Making of Star Wars? The extra stuff in the first book was well worth the extra bucks but I've not heard about anything extra for this one and don't want to have to pay another 10 or 20 dollars if I have to.

No, there is no such thing this time, only one version. Well, you have the one from Delrey (US), and the one from Aurum (UK). Both are hardback the only thing that's differ between them is the height and weight as I understand it.

The thing is Lucas did not bother to release a restored version of star wars for its 30th anniversary, and the 30th anniversary of empire will also have no restored theatrical empire strikes back.

I am also fairly sure when 2013 roles around Jedi won't get a decent release either.

So all we have are these books but no films to watch.  Thanks to Luca$.

Reading a book like making of empire opens old wounds, that we got the shit Gout in 2006 in ported over laserdisc masters in non restored DVD's that they did not even bother to do new anamorphic transfers for.

For one of the greatest sequels ever made, and it gets this treatment.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

The book is pretty great, and it's huge. I'm having a hard time finding a comfortable place to sit and read the thing. I love how passionate and honest everyone is at this point in 78/79, everything is so guarded and phony now. (like Harrison Ford saying Force 10 from Navarone was "dogshit". I can't imagine him saying that about any of his recent movies.)

I got the shit Gout in 2008 - missed a whole year of work.

Who knows how much pain and suffering those second-rate "bonus" DVDs have inflicted on OT Star Wars fans.
