Doesn't quite answer if he's read the book based on those tapes.

Do you have a more pointed version of this question?

Author
Time

Has he read the book? The interview tapes are only half the story.

Can you explain why reading this particular book is so important?  If he responds yes/no where do i go from there?  Someone mentioned they already had the Making of ESB book, if it's mentioned in the Index, that still doesn't mean he's read it.  But why would he NOT have read the one definitely public behind the scenes account of this movie.  And if he hadn't, then what, the rest of the book becomes... what?

I'm simply trying to figure out if Lucasfilm is going to continue editing and rewriting it's own history. There's a lot in the original book Lucas would probably like to go away to begin with. His statements on having written treatments for all nine films, calling the next film "Revenge of the Jedi". Not to mention the tensions and arguments on the set, and Carrie's vague health problems, which now are pretty obvious in retrospect.

It was the fact this amazing film resulted out of all of that turmoil that impressed and inspired me as a kid. I consider it the best making of book ever written.

I don't think such a book could be written about a movie made today. Everyone involved would be far too controlling of their image and publicity.

Anyway, I'll just buy the new book, or sneak read it at Barnes and Noble.

You know they are going to continue rewriting history, we define those changes in this forum.  He's never said he's written treatments for nine films, he's written the outlines.  Yet he told his marketing department at one point that there was twelve, this has all been documented.  The Revenge/Return story is more for the next book.

Sounds more like you'd like to know the type of information from the Arnold book which was included in the Making of ESB and what wasn't included.

Trying to get you to define the aspect which could make him reveal information he might normally not want to speak about.

I agree Arnold's book was created at a time when the SW machine was organizing itself and the creative process was what made it great, while now, the final products and maintaining that image is of utmost importance.

Maybe i'll ask him to shortly compare/contrast, his book vs Arnold's.

OCR doesn't work so hot for me. Plus there would always be some wiseacre who'd say the text was rewritten by fanboys. ;)

Can google get away with that?

They can't. There's too much merchandise that came out with the original title.

But for obvious reasons, they would want to downplay Lucas coming up with the title and thinking it was a good idea to begin with.

Yeah. As far back as 1983 even! In Skywalking, Lucas claims he used that title to make the storyline more secretive. And then I think in Annotated Screenplays he says he did it to trick bootleggers but somehow the enormous merchandising empire of Lucasfilm released products with the logo on it for months.

Lucas is a true artist when it comes to making up improbable excuses for things that don't require any.

Sorry everyone, was not able to get the questions asked.  There was a schedule change which means I showed up too late.  He'll be there tomorrow, if someone is going.

Book so far is interesting.  Starts off with a yellow page synopsis from the GL note books of the storyline being 6 movies. 2-4 being the Clone Wars.  and Star Wars being episode 6.  I have the feeling in this early gestation period he experimented with multiple outline ideas.  and with what's going on in the SW universe at this time, this is the version to start the Making of ESB book...

Just picked up an old ratty copy of Once Upon a Galaxy a few months ago, now I cannot wait to sit down and read it.

I still remember when I found a new copy at a book store in '84 or '85. I was so engrossed in it I could barely take my nose out of the book when my mom took me out to dinner somewhere afterwards.

It would seem all copies are ratty or disintegrating now. (Mine included.) I really doubt printed copies will survive much longer. And Hoth will thaw out before it's ever reprinted.

My copy is pretty much in perfect condition. Pages are yellow, but i think they were sort of printed that way. I'm sure it will outlast my self.

None--cool info!

Can google get away with that?

This is partly a societal debate, do you want digital access to every book ever published?  and how do you balance people searching online through the books for research with people buying the books?

Here's an article on the debate:

http://techcrunch.com/2009/10/09/settling-the-google-book-debate-and-other-unicorn-fantasies/

Google has taken the lead (by hooking up with university libraries) but doesn't have the be the defacto digital book repository. Other people have started their scanning projects:

http://www.diybookscanner.org/

What great about google books search system is you can poke any search into alot of the books you might be familiar with. "Empire Building" has been scanned for instance. This whole system is in it's infancy, was at Maker Faire (http://www.makerfaire.com/) and there were a couple book scanning people there, the tech is really low, just a cheap digital camera and a wood and glass contraption. Flip the page, lower the glass, which triggers the camera, raise the glass, flip the page, lower the glass, etc. probably close to a 100 pages an hour. don't know about the OCR'ng after wards but with a group of proof readers from the public, errors could be fixed so the digital matches the print.

The other amazing thing there were the 3d printers. watching a machine print out an object is something else. Although crude and requiring some finishing everything was generic but among all the random stuff was a 3d printed Vader and Stormtrooper head.

As for the early synopsis page, this must be page 1 of 2, the second page containing the plot layout for episodes 7-12 which GL had told Kenner's marketing department and Bantha Tracks around this time.

Just got today my copy of the making of esb book it's a great read for star wars fans and fans of movie making lots of great stuff in the book including transcripts of Alan Arnolds interviews on tape from 79-80 when the film was made.

I wonder if Rinzler has started research yet on the making of Return of The Jedi.

So little is known as to what went on during filming, the peacher book and  barely scratches the surface.

I don't think any journalist was given the same access as Once Upon a Galaxy, the filming of jedi was done very secretive.

A fan working from every available source which has been published or leaked, can only reconstruct so much.

Rinzler has access to the archives.  Too Bad David Tomblin is dead, he would be quite a person to interview on the making of Jedi.

I also wish we did not have to wait for 2013 for Jedi's making of.

Also too bad Marquand is dead.  But he could interview Kasden, Robert Watts, Howard Kanzanjian.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Rinzler from what I readed in interviews says their will be a making of return of the jedi book made soon but it will depend on how many copys the empire making of book sells. He did say on the del ray star wars book site suvudu though that del ray the book's publisher really wants to do a making of return of the jedi book.
