I did read the Zahn novel in 1991 and the others as they came out.  I think Zahn had a lot of right ideas about the way Star Wars was supposed to work, but I think the cloning got a bit out of hand.

Honestly, I was so happy Star Wars was back after being all but lost since 1984 or so that I didn't care if the cloning was weird or if salamanders could push back the force, etc.

Everybody who generalizes?

You should never be so superlative.

The only other EU books I remember reading aside from Daley and Zahn were the Jedi Academy ones, which look to be from 1994

However shortly after that series Star Wars went "Dragonlance" - ie, utter saturation of the market with complete drivel. Cinematic foreshadowing of what was to come .... !

I remember reading the first Jedi Academy book.  Thought it was terrible.

Beginning of the end. I think I read them out of lack of anything else around at the time. I guess they sold enough of them to fans like me to open the floodgates to market saturation.

I really believed the prequels would put an end to all the drivel and raise the bar high. Hindsight, eh.

I'm looking forward to re-reading Jedi Academy.  It didn't take long for me to bemoan KJA taking over the Bantam novel line and retreat into the DH comics.  And then when he started writing the DH comics, I pretty much just gave up.  But I did think that Jedi Academy was the best of what he wrote.  (Actually, the YJK series was surprisingly good.  Maybe that was his wife's fault?)  But regardless of how I felt about Jedi Academy at the time, I'm still pretty sure it's better than the Prequels.  I'm not sure that that's a solid argument for anyone wanting to read it, though...

I find that if you consider the talent of the ysalamiri to be the ability to nullify one's ability to perceive and manipulate the Force rather than the outright nullification of the Force itself, then it's easier to stomach the little critters.

That makes a lot of sense, and is supported by the text itself through implication:

When C'baoth destroys the ysalamiri on Wayland, Luke is still able to 'sense' their deaths just before the Force actually returns.

Also, the predatory vornskrs are said to have an instinctual ability to use the Force for hunting, and all of them immediately attack Luke, even on Myrkr where the Force supposedly doesn't exist at all.  But all that's really going on is that Luke is blocked from perceiving it, while the vornskrs themselves remain unimpeded--aside from being unable to detect the ysalamiri themselves, whose ability evolved as a natural defence or camoflage.  Since a Jedi's connection to the Force would be much stronger than any animal, the effect on them is correspondingly greater.
