Well, it's not exactly easy to keep track of all these damn changes.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Apparently I hadn't tortured myself enough:

I'm not very far into it, a lot of little things here and there, new wipes, Luke picking up his lightsaber is about 3 frames off for some reason in the SE...

More to come, of course.

EDIT: posted the first section and came across this a few seconds later in the movie:

You used to be able to see the glow of the engines through the bridge section, the section comes into frame later and never quite overlaps the bottom SD. Also looks like the bottom SD is at a different angle. Wow, a lot of work to have never been recognized.

Yeah, it's a different frame. I tried to overlay them in photoshop to find out if that lowest SD is at a different angle or it is just my eyes playing tricks on me due to the crushed blacks (and yes, it is a slightly different angle) and the big SD is in a slightly different position and also, you can see the third (middle) SD's engines glow through the big one in the original, so it's not new there. But the shot is recomposited.

The frames line up timewise. This splitscreen thing should be in everyones collection, there's changes in nearly every space shot

Wow, never realised the SE colouring was...so... turquoise against the original.

2004 SE.  Don't forget that the 1997 SE had vastly different color timing, and was much closer to the original colors.

Added a few more. Nothing much new but fades and a couple garbage mattes they forgot to mention.

EDIT: Added another batch. This time some changes they missed, even in shots they didn't miss.

There's a background matte there now. All the original commentary pointed out was the recomposited speeder.

A bunch of new photos up, a couple I have questions on:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1WBvrwBY-EI/TLXcupTdg5I/AAAAAAAAGJw/CZRfy2uZ1o4/s400/Comp-096.jpg

Did they really just change the color of the letters?

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_1WBvrwBY-EI/TLYczesERvI/AAAAAAAAGMU/3QOo1PpT634/s400/Comp-121.jpg

Does this really cross-fade now, or is it just Wookiegroomer's?

yeh, they changed the letter colour and added scan lines. That last one if just wookiegroomers. Looks like blended frames were used for deinterlacing. It isn't on either the SKYHD or the German premier sources

Thanks. Still looks like some of the "one frame off" things are correct.

Hey 005.  I'm glad you are doing all of this work.  It is strangely fascinating.

This shot isn't a change at all, the lack of scanlines is due to very bad vertical detail/resolution on the GOUT-telecine, you can see the same thing happen in the hologram of the Emperor later in the film. And the lack of green lettering is just another '93 color screw-up like the odd colored TIE lasers when they chase the Falcon.

From an earlier pan & scan transfer of the original film:

Have you noticed that a small part (left in frame) of the AT-AT's cockpit in the SE is transparant in comparison pics: 57 & 65 but not in the original shot... weird.

This continues to be one of the more awesome pieces of work in progress right now.

I don't know how you guys spot this stuff, you must be part hummingbird or something.

It also amazes me at how the GOUT could lose entire bloody scanlines! I mean, that's an enormous amount of picture information! Is it possible that other sources have it while the GOUT simply doesn't? Do the 1993/5 fullscreen versions show the scanlines? Or do you think it's because of the DVNR? I am a bit skeptical because that's so much picture info and the GOUT normally has comparable picture information to previous scans except in moving shots where DVNR comes into play, but that shot is stationary. In either case, it's really weird.

Done with the ESB shots, just need to upload them tomorrow. I'll try to do RotJ next week. I just watch the splitscreen very unfocused and when something looks out of sync in one half I go back to pay attention. I found that every shot after the first Vader shuttle shot has an extra frame in the SE until the next Vader scene. That may be Wookie's sync, but everything lines up other than those... You'll see what I mean later

Zombie, you may be right but that shot isn't entirely stationary so DVNR can be possible, I only have '95 fullscreen Empire in PAL VHS but I guess I can check it out. But can you explain the weird color glitches in the '93 telecine?

Look at these examples where the correct green lights change in color behind Threepio in the GOUT.

...and a few more that really highlights the bad detail in the GOUT:

What gets me about the SE changes in ESB isn't what they changed, but what they didn't. They'll fix the first shot in a scene, then not fix it again. The big example is during the Hoth battle, the first time you see Luke in his cockpit, they fixed the transparency issue. This is pointed out in the Official Changes. I guess you'd read that and assume they fixed them all, but if the Official Changes didn't list it, it didn't change. ONLY the space shots they list that have garbage mattes fixed, even if it's in the middle of the sequence. No real difference between the shots, just that one is fixed and the next one isn't. Who did quality control with this? Why fix some but not all?

Uploaded and labelled. 249 changes. Crazy. Let me know if you think I missed something.

Well, I did check my '95 THX PAL Empire on VHS and the shot looks exactly the same as in the GOUT, no scanlines & no green displays. So you were right, zombie, it isn't due to bad detail/resolution but perhaps some weird optical glitch, the scanlines in the holograms show up on the VHS though. These glitches in the THX masters are a real mystery, I cannot understand how they happened.

Great job with the comparisons doubleofive, keep it up. And Lucasfilm doesn't have any quality control. The only finished versions are the original films, the SE is only a playground & work in progress for Lucas and his team to make money on dumb little kids. If they would release a finished & final glitch-free product, they wouldn't have anything left to sell. ;)
