One of the first things I was taught in film classes that involve color-correction, first in Telecine & Color Correction and now in Avid Online, is that you need to calibrate your display. (Hell, we're expected to do it every time we sit down to color correct, but that's likely just because other people use the workstations outside of our classes, so we have to be sure to undo any damage they did.)
Look up "display calibration" on Google, I'm sure you can find something to help you there. If your display can do blue-only, or you have a blue filter, you can use SMPTE bars to calibrate it (you can still use them to set brightness).
