When was the last time you actually watched a prequel? (Or: Revenge of the Sith still blows.) — Page 2

The last time I watched TPM was May 19, 1999. I saw The Phantom Edit about five years ago.

AOTC and ROTS I have seen more frequently, not always by my own choosing.

that's the most plausible explanation i've ever heard.

That's quite possible...

ROTS gets about 80 percent overall good reviews on most movie sites, including rottentomatoes.com

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

By Jay Antani

The bar has been set so low in mainstream Hollywood movies that it’s not even worth seriously analyzing this stuff. Lucas’ franchise is a cultural event and that, more than the movie, is cause for serious worry. What can you say when a series of movies (beginning with 1999′s Phantom Menace) is this incompetently made? Lucas has a tin ear for dialogue, and he’s so grossly oblivious to issues of dramatic tension and narrative pacing that, while watching Revenge of the Sith, I just sat there benumbed to it all. The kindest thing I can say about Sith is that it’s a couple of notches better than Menace and generally watchable. It’s an orgiastic spectacle of visual effects and painterly CGI alien cityscapes in place of smart, engrossing storytelling. What’s weird is that the most emotionally resonant moments in it don’t really stem from the story itself but from how we causally connect the implications made therein with our memory of the original three Star Wars movies…sigh. Still, if this tripe works for you, so be it. For me, this (along with other recent drivel like Sin City) is another nail in the coffin for the art of storytelling in Hollywood. And, while I’m on it, it points to the degradation of intelligence in culture as a whole, both in America and in its imperial subsidiaries overseas.

Grade: C+

Just wanted to point out that this is the first review on the site and it's considered "fresh."

This seemed a bit harsh, but then I remembered that Shia Labeouf has an acting career.

*sigh*

Last time I watched a prequel was Trooperman's rough cut of Episode 2, Shroud of the Dark Side.  I still don't really like the story much, but done that way it became a much better movie than the real thing.

Haven't watched the actual prequels at all in a long time, except for a few specific scenes to test out my 5.1 system when I got it set up at the beginning of this year.

Last prequel I watched was TPM on VHS that I bought but that was just checking if the tape was fine, I really don't remember actually seeing the film, LOL. I'm not even sure when it was, this year or last year.

I haven't seen AOTC in at least two years and I watched ROTS on Christmas two years ago when it was on TV. I hope these will be the last time I ever saw them.

In 2006 when I had bought the DVD of ROTS and tried to see if I could somehow save it from crappiness by editing it ... I doubt it now, though.

I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this, but even after smoking some weed, I still can't sit through any of the prequels.  But God damn it if I don't feel like a kid again when I'm high and throw in the Original Trilogy.  :)

EDIT:  I forgot to actually answer the question of this thread.  lol  Only time I watch the prequels is to show off my Home Theater.  1080p and the Lightsaber battles are all that is shown.  I have tried numerous times to rewatch The Prequels, but I always either walk away or just turn on ESB.  Hell, I would rather watch Ewoks.

That's funny, because in trying to re-watch them a few weeks ago, I discovered that the only way I could get through them was to get baked beforehand.

Man, I guess I'll never enjoy the prequels.

They can be great for demoing sound setup etc. That's it.

I don't actually recall the last time I saw ROTS, but I didn't hate it when I saw it in theaters.

I watched ROTS about 2 weeks ago.  For all of its thematic merits, it really is an amateurishly executed, juvenile mess of a movie.

Obi Wan: "Anakin!  Palpatine is evil!"

Hayden's non-response: "Don't make me kill you."

WTF?

Well I believe that Darth Vader said to Luke at one point: "don't make destroy you" or something along those lines, so it is kinda Vader-like.. I guess.

Last night, a local TV is airing the entire Saga in local 480p stereo greatness... I really had nothing to do, so I watched RotS. For the first time since early 2007, when I used it to test my HDTV.

Some parts are actually good, and some of the effects work is still outstanding, but overall it's the mess I remember and the green-screen glory is slowly beginning to show its age. I wonder how AotC looks in HD...

The only time I really appreciated TPM was when I watched the leaked version on the Internet before the VHS release. The low quality of image and sound made you focus on the essential and you were not fooled by any special effect... Even better: you didn't make the difference between real things and CGI, so it was just to follow the story and forget the useless talkative details. It wouldn't have worked so well will the two following bad stories though.
