Comparison pic 10: the Stardestroyer with the different engine glow was a '97 recomp, that is also the case with the whole opening shot. ;)

It may not seem like a lot, but I think it is.

Ok, I checked it and it's identical in the '81 opening...

~28 frames 1977

~39 frames 1981 & '97/'04

...maybe they'll get the musical timing right again on the fourth version. ;)

msycamore:

The 2004 receding logo is MUCH MUCH faster than the 1997 one.  I'm 100% sure of this.  I'd worn out my '97 SE VHS'es, so I remembered them well.  I popped in the 2004 Star Wars disc when it first came out, and saw that, and immediately thought, "Oh, fuck.  They really cocked it up this time."

Ok, you may be right about it. I just realised that my '97-source is in PAL format, sorry. ;) Completely forgot about it.

Alright, lets once and for all break this down:

1977: Logo recedes at a normal pace, original starfield, original crawl without Episode IV which appears at correct musical cue, slow pan down with Tatooine appearing at correct musical cue.

1981: Logo recedes at a normal pace, new starfield, new crawl with Episode IV which appears after the musical cue, fast pan down with Tatooine and third moon appearing before musical cue. (all home video versions)

1997: Logo recedes at a normal pace, 1977 starfield, 1981 crawl with Episode IV which appears after the musical cue, fast pan down with Tatooine (no third moon) appearing before musical cue.

2004: Logo recedes at a faster pace, 1977 starfield, 1981 crawl with Episode IV which appears after the musical cue, fast pan down with Tatooine (no third moon) appearing before musical cue.

REVISITED: Logo recedes at a normal pace, 1977 starfield, 1981 crawl with Episode IV which appears at correct musical cue, slow pan down to Tatooine (with third moon) appearing at correct music cue.

BIG QUESTION: Some have said the crawls were digitally recreated for the SE. Is this true?

Added another shot:

Figured I'd grab the obvious mistakes. Any others I should be aware of?

The fast receding logo first appeared in the 1997 SE, that I am 110% sure of, with PAL source or not. I believe that what ChainsawAsh means is that the '04 version was even further sped up. He seems pretty sure about it, I haven't checked that yet.

And where comes this third moon talk from? I posted a link to the '81 opening shot on the previous page, here you have a beautiful pic of the matte painting which was used for the shot, http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070811234427/starwars/images/7/7f/Tatooine.jpg

I cannot see it??

You know, I'm not sure. I know that Adywan added a third moon to Revisited, and others have mentioned it...

Sorry if my last post came of as sounding rude, I'm just curious if I've actually missed something here?

No, I'm genuinely curious too. Adywan talked as if it was obviously supposed to be there:

I'd ask him, but I think he's pretty shaken up about his dad.

EDIT: Nearest I can glean from Wookieepedia is that there are 3 moons in AotC, so Ady may have added it instead of taking one away from AotC in the future.

Well, I've never seen his fan edit but that moon isn't in any official version of the film.

Apparently its here:

but this is neither here nor there, especially since its not there in 1981.

So this is more accurate:

1977: Logo recedes at a normal pace, original starfield, original crawl without Episode IV which appears at correct musical cue, slow pan down with Tatooine appearing at correct musical cue.

1981: Logo recedes at a normal pace, new starfield, new crawl with Episode IV which appears after the musical cue, fast pan down with Tatooine appearing before musical cue. (all home video versions)

1997: Logo recedes at a faster pace, 1977 starfield, 1981 crawl with Episode IV which appears after the musical cue, fast pan down with Tatooine appearing before musical cue.

2004: Logo recedes at a possibly even faster pace, 1977 starfield, 1981 crawl with Episode IV which appears after the musical cue, fast pan down with Tatooine appearing before musical cue.

REVISITED: Logo recedes at a normal pace, 1977 starfield, 1981 crawl with Episode IV which appears at correct musical cue, slow pan down to Tatooine appearing at correct music cue.

The question remains of the recreating of the crawls for the SE. Fact or Fiction?

Cool articles. I wonder why they just didn't recreate them for the SE. I'm betting they will for the 3Dification.

Does someone have a video of the crawl from the 1997 SE?  I really, REALLY don't think the logo was sped up at all for that version.  I don't mind being proven wrong, but I've been 100% sure it's a 2004 change since, well, 2004.

Ok, I compared the 1997 SE with the 2004 DVD crawl frame by frame and they are exactly the same as I thought, the weird thing is, even though the 1981 SW logo recedes much slower than the SE, it disappear much earlier cause the SE logo slows down after a while.

That really is a 1997 SE change?  I'm floored.  I had no idea ...

Maybe I could convert the opening of the '97 crawl and post a clip of it, so you could see for yourself. I tried to post comparison images of it earlier but imagehack is really fucked up sometimes. :(

But... maybe the PAL-master of the '97SE have a different crawl, but I really doubt it.

Are you comparing PAL '97 to PAL '04?  I know the non-English versions of the 2004 crawl's receding logo were unaffected (that's how Adywan fixed it), maybe the English PAL 2004 crawl was unaffected as well (though I doubt it).

No, I don't even own the '04 in PAL format. If you don't believe me, you could always check your VHS tape or wait for me to convert the "flunk" footage to NTSC...

Downloaded and tested. 36 frames in, both 1997 and 2004's logo is at half the size of the 1977 version.
