So it sounds like this is a lot harder than Halo 3 was on Legendary?

Yes - it's packed full of elites who unlike the brutes of halo 3

  • use armour abilities effectively

Brutes in halo 3 would drop bubble sheilds then not even bother to use them.

  • try to avoid your gunfire

Brutes would often stand around or charge directly at you - not even firing...

  • work well in packs

they try to sneak around behind you while you're distracted.

As much as many people hate Blue Shift and Opposing Force, I absolutely love them! I thought Gear Box had a brilliant idea in letting us experience the games events through the eyes of more than one individual. And it was always fun to catch a glimpse of Gordon Freeman go running by on the other side of the screen and think "Hey! I remember doing that!"

I joined Steam several days ago. Finally bought The Orange Box (retail from Best Buy) since I also own it for 360.

Several hours earlier I found my HALF-LIFE 1 box with the game and of course CD-Key. Activated CD key with Steam and HOLY FUCK it gave me not only options to download HALF-LIFE but also for, and I already did download them, these games:

HALF-LIFE: Blue Shift

HALF-LIFE: Opposing Force

Counter-Strike

Day of Defeat

Deathmatch Classic

Ricochet (never heard of it)

Team Fortress Classic

^I've never played any of those except for of course just HALF-LIFE out of the lot. I wonder why Gunman Chronicles wasn't offered? http://steamcommunity.com/id/the_flash2019/games?tab=all

Not too shabby for entering in a product/CD key of a game I bought back in 2000. Now I'm considering purchasing retail of Left 4 Dead: Game of the Year, Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike: Source (comes with Day of Defeat: Source) and no idea what else. A few Source mods look interesting to me, especially the Zombie one. Already downloaded Nightmare House 2 but haven't played it yet.

Garry's Mod is about the only thing I play on Steam. Its just a Source Engine toy, where you can play with the physics of everything.

Wow, now that they have Steam for Mac, maybe I ought to dig out my old PC copy of Half-Life and enter the serial and see what it gives me access too. Not sure how many of any of those game have Mac counterparts, probably none, I know HL doesn't. I guess the serial of my PC version of Half-Life 2 would give me HL2 for Mac, but since I have it on the 360 I'd rather just play it there.

Wow, if they made an HD port of the first Half-Life complete with expansions for Xbox Arcade, I'd wet my pants right now. That would be so awesome... same for System Shock 2.

I don't play on Steam very often. I have HL2, HL1+everything, Portal, Garry's Mod, and that's about it.

Wow! I'm glad you said something about this! I've had a Half-Life GOTY cd sitting around for ages. New games! Yay!

You know, HL2 was one of the first games I ever preordered. I went to Gamestop in August 2003 to preorder it, so excited to have such a graphical powerhouse on my PC in less than a month.

I had that receipt in my wallet for over a year. Barely legible, they still honored it. Then I found out that it required Steam, and I didn't even have to have a box at all.

I later sold that box at a yard sale, to find out a year later that it was still tied to my Steam Account, and I had sold them what amounts to an empty box.

All that, and I don't think I've actually beaten it without cheating. Heck, I don't think I've beat HL1 without cheating either. Too easy to cheat on PC games, I can't resist.

I used a god mode cheat a few times near the end, but for the most part I managed to beat HL2 without cheating.

I've still never finished HL1 though. :\

This is really disappointing to hear... what is up with cheating. Neither HL or HL2 are extremely difficult games, and they both have adjustable difficulty settings for those who are not up to the task. I don't see any reason to cheat.

And Nanner, what the hell! Go beat HL1 now! ;) The last parts of that game are pretty awesome, actually. And once you beat it, play Opposing Force and Blue Shift, since they ought to be included in your GOTY edition via Steam.

Though I have just condemned cheat codes, I am actually a bit fan of them for their ability to add reply value. I think it is a total shame to use them on your first play through, but once you have beaten the game, they can add a lot of fun. I read that the reason why most newer games lack debug modes is because they actually harm sales of the games. People use cheats and beat the game and grow tired of it faster, then they turn around and sell it, contributing to a higher supply of used games on the market which in turn makes for a lower demand for brand new games, which ultimately makes the developers lose money. I would have never imagined cheat codes causing those kinds of problems, but it kind of makes sense.

Just Cause 2 is one of the few games I can think of where cheating actually makes it better. I don't have any kind of god mode mods for it (that would make it TOO easy), but I do have an infinite ammo mod, which preserves just the right amount of difficulty. I also have a flying/superhero mod, which makes the game WAY more fun. Why grapple/parachute all the way across the island when you can FLY LIKE FUCKING SUPERMAN?! With that mod turned on, it becomes the best superhero game never made (the mod community is actually working on an Iron Man total conversion mod). Another game that gets better with cheating is JK2: Jedi Outcast. God mode + edited sabercolor + dismemberment cheat = what Force Unleashed should have been.

As for Half-Life 2 cheating, I only used god mode for about 5 minutes total near the end, in a really rough patch.

The JK2 dismemberment cheat wasn't so much a cheat. I remember using that when I first played through it (if we are talking about the same thing, it is where you edited or replaced a file which made dismemberment much more frequent, right?), that just made things a whole lot more fun. JK2 had the saber burn marks down perfectly...

Anywho...

I cannot believe Fallout New Vegas is less than a month away. Decided to look into pre-ordering it today, and was looking around for the best deal. I don't really care about in game items, which at first seemed to be all anyone was offering, but in my searches, a unique piece of actual physical swag caught my eye. BestBuy is offering a set of drink coasters with pre-order. Even though they are just lame coasters, I am a sucker for swag, so BestBuy won my pre-order... until I discovered Kmart has the same deal only... it is the weirdest pre-order in the history of pre-orders (I think). You buy the coasters for five dollars, and are given a $15 dollar off coupon only good between Oct. 19 - 30. The real fun part is it is good for $15 off ANY video game, regular, sale, or clearance price, not just New Vegas.

Long story short, ran out and bought two of the things, and can now get $15 off any two games between the 19th and 30th, and can still pre-order FONV from wherever I want.

Coasters (set of four) are just regular cardboard bar style coasters, but it is kind of nice to see real physical pre-order swag once again.

C3PX, if you're into physical game swag, you need to check out some of Telltale Games' deluxe packages. Their Tales of Monkey Island Deluxe Edition comes in a big treasure chest box and comes with a cloth map, coaster (from the club in the game), a pin with Stan on it, a pirate doubloon, a big cloth map, a tarot card, AND the DVD of the game that comes with the special pre-order slipcase!

And don't get me started on the Sam and Max bundles!

That is actually really cool that Telltale is doing that, those old games used to come with cool swag in the box, so it is appropriate that the publisher who revived old adventure games has also gone for reviving the swag.

Unfortunately, I haven't really had any interest in the new Sam & Max games or even the new Monkey Island episodes (played the first one thanks to you giving us the heads up when they were giving it away for free on talk like a pirate day, I think it was). Just came a few years too late for me. Still love the originals because of the nostalgia factor, but I really couldn't see myself getting caught up in any new adventures of Guybrush Tweepfrood.
