It's a good idea and I don't think the actual time cut from the movie would be missed. I just think we'd miss a lot character introductions. The material doesn't really support it either.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with going back to the planet, it fits in the traditional story arc of resolving a problem that was set up in the first act.

It would be nice however if we could see some change on Naboo: blastmarks on the buildings or (partially) destroyed buildings, grazed meadows, burnt down forests, stuff like that. That would really drive home the seriousness of the queen's plight throughout the film.
