Yeah, it's a classic SW moment and it should stay as is. Maybe the way it is in Angel's mockup would be good - basically the same as the original but more realistic - but then, it's quite fine as it is.

^^^ Agreed.  It's a space fantasy and doesn't require explanation.  The scene is beautiful and needs no tinkering.

Agreed!

Or maybe have the rebels building a death star-y station that will manage to eliminate the empire thread in ROTJ. Then have a battle station battle between cybertron and unicron.. i mean death star and life star

you know guys, you can keep the basic appearance (with the white-ish look) while making it look more like whatever it is supposed to be.  If it is a star forming, make it look more like a star forming while keeping the whiteness of the original and not make it too elaborate.  If it is a galaxy, maybe put the fleet a bit closer due what I mentioned above (to be at that distance would be 100s if not 1000s of light years away).

Yeah, yeah, it's a movie, but this is also a suggestion thread too.  Even so, is anything going to be done with the flight path of the Falcon?

I have been thinking about why this scene is so powerful and it seems to me a very clever piece of film making.

At the start of ESB, we are presented with our first glimpse of the Imperial fleet, a vast array of giant warships. In the finale, we get our first look at the rebel fleet, a small number of puny freighters and a medical frigate*. This emphasises the gulf between the two adversaries. It adds to our feeling that the rebel cause is hopeless.

Secondly, the scene shows both the audience and our heroes exactly what is at stake: the entire galaxy**. This reminds us that the loss of Han Solo is just a small human tragedy compared to the bigger picture.

At the start of the film we see the Empire focus its considerable power upon a handful of humans hiding out on an inhospitable planet in some galactic backwater. At the end of the movie we see the puny rebel fleet up against the whole galaxy. The comparison could not be starker. This is the cliff hanger taken to a whole new level. Not only are we left wondering how they will rescue Han but how can they possible save the galaxy.

The situation is hopeless; but by some light touches, a smile from leia and by having our heroes stand firm and face the task ahead (literally having them stand at the window and gaze at the galaxy they must save) we are given a glimmer of hope.

The finishing touch is John Williams score. I think he peaked with Empire, the music as the rebel fleet fades out is full of both hope and despair.

What a setup for a finale. If only I had a time machine I would go back and beg Kershner to direct ROTJ.

* Adding the large mon calamari ships here would ruin the comparison of the Empire and the Rebellion. When I was a kid I just assumed the Squids joined the rebellion in between ESB and ROTJ.

** I think the imagery only works if this scene is the galaxy. A star forming region does not have the same impact.

Agreed on all counts, Xenu.  And it makes sense (to me, anyway) that the MonCals only joined between ESB and ROTJ, so there's no point in adding any of their ships into ESB.

At the very least, please, no added Rebel ships a the end of ESB.

I still prefer the idea that it's a forming star. It symbolizes a new beginning. They have all just gone through hell. They have suffered a heavy defeat and been forced to abandon their base on Hoth, they have been betrayed at Bespin and have lost their friend, Luke has suffered not only the loss of his hand but also just found out that the person he hates the most is his father.

Now Lando is off with Chewie to find Han, his character fully changed from bad guy to good guy and they head off towards the star. A new beginning for him too.

I have never liked the idea of it's a galaxy. It's moving too fast for one and its bright center looks more like a star than the center of the galaxy.

Just because it was said the be the galaxy in 2003 doesn't mean to say it was originally intended to be just that. I don't believe most things that are said about the trilogy since the early 90's because it just seems that they change the history all the time.

Hi Adywan, So if some people think its a new star and some the galaxy is the best solution to leave it as is? I personally think the existing backdrop looks great and people can see it as a galaxy/new star as they see fit.

Whats the point then the rebels hiding in this particular galaxy in the first place? ;)

Why not the empire not have patrols outside the perimeter? like it wasnt a plan that the rebels should mass outside a galaxy? Since the dude from ANH mentioned Ultimate power in the universe so  they must know other galaxies "in" the universe. so i assume a fleet of stardestroyers can be OUTSIDE the galaxies and from there send the probes? (i assume no because behind the SD in the beginning we see a small moon

You can add some impressive unique planetary system (sullust maybe?) that fits to a typical clische fairytale ending. and there you have it. No science no politics just make it look awesome.. :)

But isn't that the whole point of what makes a good movie. It enables the audience to interpret things their own way instead of having everything spelled out for them (like the bloody PT)

I'm not going to be changing the way it looks. I've loved that star ever since 1980. Some things just don't need to be changed.

Interesting point.

If they weren't unspecified elements into a movie then endless debates and waste of times would be pointless... I love movie industry :D

Well ady since you will enhance the shot (meaning remove/fix the blue screen effects/starfields etc) im happy with that.

Plus, it puts the star back in Star Wars :)

Gee, I always just watched and thought, there's the rebel fleet out in space, they got chased out of their base and where the heck are they going to go from there?  At the end of IV they had a base at least, and had taken out the Death Star.  I didn't think, that's not even their galaxy (how would anyone even know this watching the movies without an external agent telling them that?), that's a star forming, I just thought, they're in space....

All of the movies move from light to darkness but some of the other ones have some light that returns at the very end (throne room in Ep IV) but this one is elevator that only goes down.  No resolution to Han being captured, Luke had his hand chopped off and Vader is his dad.  See ya' in a few years.  I think the end should stay dark-ish.  If you want to make this something forming you could find a way to make it look ominous.  I look forward to seeing how you portray it regardless.

It looks like a galaxy... so even back to 80s i think any science book or magazine (popular science?) could have an image of our galaxy that can do the connection Thats why i said the forming star is lookalike with a galaxy. It can cause confusion. Space have personality, only when has something to show. If yes then make sure you will do it right if that is called nebula or a spaceship or a planet or a galaxy aka forming star ;) But this is ady's edit so move on

Btw i like the avatar from the Network you have :D
