Importing footage from other sources may work in limited doses. I guess it depends on how radical you want to make the edit.

Ziz, I think you have the right idea. I would just be careful the matte replacements don't look too good.

You don't even have to fully replace the mattes, just play with the color balance and border blending between matte and live action elements, and maybe add some minor activity off on the edges...birds flying by or some such. "Adywan-ize" them, so to speak.
