A mixture of live action, physical models and matte work (essentially what they tried to do here but done better) could make a redux of this shot work (I'm not sure there's anything salvageable from the original version beyond the design).

This is where a bit of 3D computer modeling could help because it could really help getting the perspective right when filming new models and actors for inserts.

Watching documentaries it seems that some of the live action inserts were an eleventh hour decision because of the dead areas in the middle of the shot.

Those don't look too bad it's the live action inserts that were already there (at the bottom of the frame) that don't sit right. 

The lighting and the scale doesn't match the painting in any way.

The Lando shot is another matter.

A physical model may help but maybe cosmetic alteration of a ESB or even a ANH shot of the full sized prop might lend that shot a bit more physical reality than even a really good model.
