I have no problem with the design (it follows a tradition which can be traced through 2001 and every Star Wars movie).

The execution was wonky though

I don't know why they couldn't have pulled the real ships out for one last hurrah stuck them in a redressed Death Star hanger and added matte elements and real models.

This matte on it's own is too painterly in the fore and mid-ground, the live elements subsequently don't sit well inside it and the matte of the Falcon behind Lando is hideous (almost like ANH had never happened).

The perspective is all over the place too.
