So they have changed Obi-Wan's roar again. I'm dreading to think what it sounds like this time especially when they said it will sound more human and that it will sound like someone. OH god.

The hell? I think the world has been punk'd and Lucasfilm actually consists of about 6 computer guys playing with their toys. I'm picturing this:

Having been to Skywalker Sound myself on numerous occasions, it's just unfathomable.

That must have been interesting! Did you feel like a rebel spy just being there? ;)

Where were you in '77?

About Obi-Wan's roar, when I was young I always thought that it was the scream of the Sandpeople who got scared off by Obi-Wan's presence. ;)

I know there has been silly EU explanations of this beeing Ben imitating a Crayt Dragon or something but in the original sound-mix they actually used the same sound effect they used for the Dewback earlier in the film, so maybe that's why they opted to change it. Nevertheless, the new sound effect sounds terrible as the rest of the audio mix.

I found this info in an old SW magazine:

"In Lucas' early draft, the Jedi Knights let out an ear-piercing scream just before they attacked. This idea survived in the call that heralds the arrival of Obi-Wan."

Can someone confirm if this info is true? I haven't read the earlier drafts in a long time, and I cannot remember that part.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

It's probably gonna be something like, "I'm Anakin! Remember me? I killed all your relatives way back when! You better run!!!"

Or "I don't like sand, it gets everywhere!".

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

It's probably going to be a sample of Anakin shouting "I Hate You!!". Or maybe the human bit is to lead us off the scent when it is in fact jar Jar. That would actually explain why the Sand people ran off like that.

The old (original)sound effect was perfect. some things just don't need changing

Here is my guess: they changed it in 2004 to sound as if Obi Wan was imitating the call of the Boga lizard from Revenge of the Sith. But ROTS was still in early post production at that time, and they ended up altering what the final Boga sounded like, so that once ROTS was out the ANH call didn't sound like anything recognizable anymore.

So maybe they will be updating it to sound more like the way the Boga lizard actually sounded like in ROTS, rather than the bizarre and random creature effect in the 2004 version.

This would be stupid in the first place though, since Tusken Raider's shouldn't know the wildlife calls of a species that lives on a completely different planet.

This was my thought about the new howl at first but now they are saying that it's going to sound more human  and sound like someone we know. So i can't see it being the boga lizard. Maybe they will CG Obi-Wan flapping his arms shouting.....

IT'S A TRAP!!!!!!

Angry Ani sound makes no sense, as the entire Tusken camp was slaughtered. There might be a Tusken version of the Boogeyman that was born from other tribes discovering the carnage though.

The Krayt dragon tidbit has been around since the 70's, and makes more sense, as we see a dead one in the movie.

I heard the rumor of them using Anakin's voice to scare the sand people years ago and hope it is false.  If it is not i will smash all copies of the blu ray, lol.  just kidding.

Behaps the audio on the blu-rays of star wars of episodes 4 ,5 and 6 will be fixed on the blu-rays. Is'nt that what we all want as star wars fans? We just don't know what will be fixed and what won't be yet. Until we get some comformation from LFL we won't what changes will be made / fixed  for the blu-ray audio tracks.

Problem is, the Lucasfilm definition of "fixed" is our definition of "fucked." And I'm sure Lucas isn't nearly done fixing up the films.

The audio for the films won't be messed up for the blu-ray release. Who know's it just might be fixed after all.

Its the same guy mixing it that mixed the 2004 version though. If he called that "a labor of love" why would he suddenly turn 180 degrees? I mean, it's not like he just screwed up one or two things, like the music channels in the end battle of SW, the mix is just a mess wholesale. They needed a new mixer, not the same guy doing it twice. It's like Ben Burtt editing the prequels--"maybe he'll get it right this time." And maybe Ben Burtt just can't edit.

I don't know about Matthew Wood's background, I know he's been working with Burtt for a while now in various ways, but mixing is its own art and some "sound guys" just can't mix. I know Wood didn't mix any Star Wars audio before 2004, and in general Star Wars mixes have been pretty high quality in the past. But whatever, I don't really give two shits about the Special Edition with more audio changes, the 1997 5.1 was very good and has less intrusions than any version since. Personally, I'm too jaded by the 2004 release to give anyone involved the benefit of the doubt.

Matt Wood and Ben Burtt are good sound designers. I don't think the blu-ray release will have messed up audio but again that's one man's opionion we will have to wait and see I guess.

This thread has become boring.  Stubborn optimism vs. informed pessimism, repeat until nobody cares.  lol

Personally I think this Matthew Wood guy must be completely tone deaf, but maybe his hearing and sense of good taste will miraculously return.  Who knows?!

Yeah this thread should be all negative, I hate this and I hate that. I want this person beaten and that one dead because my opinon is fact and rules over all. Nevermind many of us would never reach anywhere close to the levels of Burtt or Wood.

No, most of us will not reach their level, but why screw with the original sound mixes? Do you serious believe that the rebel fanfare mixed out of the Death Star attack sounds better than the original? A classic silver screen moment ruined by either  a mistake, apathy, stupidity, or all three? If the 2004 mix is the extant of Wood's ability, then I do seriously question his ability as a sound mixer.
